Once, long ago there was a Princess. One day while strolling through the courtyard she noticed a flower growing up between the stones. She didn't want anyone to step on the flower so she ordered a palace guard to watch over it. Then she forgot about it minutes after walking away.
But the palace guard remained and kept watch as he was ordered. When he was relieved, he relayed the order. Long after the flower had died, long after the princess had died, centuries later, there was still a palace guard stationed at that position. No one remembered the original order, or why a palace guard had to be stationed there. They just continued to do it, because no one rescinded the order. And no one would rescind the order because they assumed that if that spot had been guarded for so long there must have been a very good reason why they were guarding it.
