Prior to the Puritan movement and the desire to remove women from power, women had the right to vote (in the colonies and in much of europe), were highly influential in politics (look up Agrippina the Younger, Queen Elizabeth I, or the women of the French Revolution) and were land and business owners.
In reality we are traveling back to a balance as is currently seen in "soft societies" like Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Where spouses can take on either the gatherer or the nurturer role regardless of gender and not fear social stigma.
Of course the fact that I'm advocating equality and "doing what's right for you regardless of gender" and not "kill men" is going to go right over your head.
