I missed the last sewing machine thread or rather, I didn't pay attention and now I need a sewing machine (Never had one before). I was thinking about getting a Brother XL2600i, is that recommended for a beginner? If not what are your favorites? Thanks again.

I have that machine. I got it new at a garage sale and it's the best $20 I ever spent.

Sews through anything, doesn't jam, has plenty of stitches and tons of foot attachments.

I think it's a great beginning sewing machine.

Looks pretty good. I got a Janome J1012 as a beginner and it's done everything I needed so far. Ability to do a button holes is really useful - 1-step button hole thing on the machine you're looking at could be good.

My big piece of advice at the moment - once you get it, pay attention to the needles you put in. I make a lot of bags, usually with a thick outer fabric, cotton liner and plastic layer in the middle. (Very rainy here.) Also denim rag quilts. And oh holy crap has my life gotten better since I discovered denim needles. Can take fucking ANYTHING without breaking.

Thanks so much for the tips guys. And thanks so much for telling me about those needles. I'm going to be a bag lady when I'm older. Oh god. It looks like this machine is about $89 on amazon, is that about right? It looks like a good deal to me.

And yeah, that's a pretty good price for a new basic machine I think. I paid £90 for my Janome (britfag here, yeah.)
