I'm cosplaying Homura (outfit based off this picture). I'm not so concerned about being accurate to the anime obviously, as being able to make the cosplay, having fun with it, and as a gift for my boyfriend. My mom and dad probably will insist on the skirt being knee-length, so being 100% accurate hasn't been an option .

That said, I don't know how to do the diamond pattern on her hose/stockings. Would fabric paint be okay? Look crappy? Is there something I can buy with a purple diamond pattern? Any other suggestions?

Controlling father obsessed with public image issues. I get to cosplay only because my mom was a former costumer. And my mom covers for my boyfriend and I, so he think we do nothing he would object to.

Underageb&.

My adive is to make the skirt accurately short and add an underskirt (made from some cheap fabric) that's easy to remove (elastic waist, so you can just pull it off or something like that).

Your parents will see you in an acceptable skirt at home, then you can pull out the underskirt when you get to the con.

What's sad, is I'm 19, and my mom's staff at the con and my dad tags along. Otherwise, I definitely would do that--well, I wouldn't have to worry about Dad finding out what I'm wearing and pitching a fit and ruining everyone's con in the first place. I'd just wear what I wanted, and they'd be none the wiser since he'd never see my outfit.

But I could do that for photos.

Seriously, Homura's key characteristics are her beautiful long, black hair and slender, sleek legs. If you cover to the knees than you'll lose a lot of 'cool' visual aspect of her.

Or just pick another costume that is modest.

I may just go ahead, make a shorter short, and my parents can deal. I've developed really nice legs, and I'm getting really tired of never showing them off. Maybe not as short as Homura's, but at least halfway on the upper thigh.

Personal thought on knee length: Yuck. I honestly don't want to do that.

I watched the entire series. But I also said in my first post the outfit was based off the fanart. Some artists show it as boots, some as stockings. It makes more sense practicality (practical in anime, whut?) for it to be stockings, those boots go up to her panties otherwise.I don't want to wear boots that go up to my panties.

They're not boots. They're tights that go over the shoes.
The best way to replicate the look is to make tights that fit over a pair of pumps.

There's another option. It's called "shoepants". You make them out of spandex and cut a hole for the heel of the shoe to stick out. It can look quite nice sometimes, and is exactly what Homuhomu looks like she's wearing. And hell, your father might be a lot more OK with you wearing full on spandex pants with a skirt over than if you were wearing tights.

I didn't think homuhomu's skirt was that short. You're wearing tights, why is it a problem? That's really silly even if your dad is more conservative.

For the stockings, someone in another thread suggested these tights from sockdreams
http://www.sockdreams.com/products/socks/tights/anna-sui-turkish-tights they're not plain diamonds but they're pretty similar and the design looks really lovely. But fabric paint should be fine too as long as you're wearing them while you paint them.
