Just a question for you guys:

I quit my job since this semester started just so I can take a shitload of units. All this time, I've been relying on my pitiable amount of Financial Aid. So my question is, can you guys go to a con, such as AX or Otakon, without spending any lick of money in the Dealer's hall (well, save for food)? I really want to go AX this year, and it's the only time I can fully relax, but I feel the lack of pocket money to buy merch will only make me disappointed.

How do you guys do away with the temptations of the Dealer's Hall?

By just not buying shit? I spent $40 on MELL CDs and that was only because she was there to sign stuff. $10 for a poster for Megumi Nakajima, again, because she was there to sign it. Had those two not been there I would have spent zero. Have fun at the panels, concerts, with friends, and if you don't have friends, while making new ones. You don't need to spend a dime.

But to address the OP, the short answer is, I don't. There's some cool stuff in there, but nothing that I feel like I wouldn't be able to find elsewhere if I really wanted it. Sometimes all it takes is a second to pause and consider whether you REALLY need/want something before moving on. Just... don't let a wad of cash get the best of you. Only buy what you plan to buy, nothing else.

I wish I could use this mentality for food, but unfortunately, I fucking splurge on food at cons haha.

Me the fuck too! I never really buy anything from the dealers room because I think everything is a scam in there. 90% you could easily find those things online for cheaper. Unless it's a MUST HAVE RIGHT NOW/I WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER CHANCE thing, don't buy it! But when it comes to those motherfucking Japanese snack food like mochi/dango (never Pocky!), I'm willing to bust my wallet. ;_;

Depending on the con, you can probably find it cheaper, but then you have to think about international conversion(depending on your hobby) and then shipping fees. And then see which one is a better bet.

But seriously I'm ok with spending my money on the food stuffs and the Dealers Room. I'm primarily a doujinshi buyer and even within a con I show people where to buy their doujinshi at for cheaper or who has a better service.

You can usually find stuff in teh dealer's room online for way less. That's how I don't spend money in the dealer's room. Personally I blow more money in the Artist Alley getting cute and unique prints. I don't get how people can waste a bunch of cash in the dealer's room personally.
