The EGL community does't even show up on the first page. The handbook is like link 6. And how often do you even make it to the 4th link when you google search and the first 3 results get you what looks like the information you want?

We laugh when milanoo posts it's random shit all over the internet, but what they are really doing is associating the word milanoo with lolita as many times as possible for the google page crawlers to see. The number of times those words are seen together raises milanoo as a relevant result in a search.

I was lucky that when I first stumbled across lolita, it was through lolita blogs, so I managed to make it through the rocky waters of the coast and into the safe harbor of LJ, but I distinctly recall looking at ebay, milanoo, clothesespeciallyforyou dresses and wanting them before I learned better. It's just a good thing that at the time I was a cheap fuck and still thought $70 for a dress was expensive. Now i know it's expensive for shit from Milanoo.

All of this. I'd liked the fashion for the longest time, and the first place I came across was Milanoo. The only thing that stopped me was lack of funds, and nothing on the site was to my tastes at all. I'd known about the lolita fashion for yeaaaarrrsss but it wasn't until last year around my birthday I decided I would take a plunge and become a lolita.

Fortunately, when I was 15 first looking into lolita, whenever I googled Gothic Lolita I was usually directed to one of the brand sites (I think it was Meta that I most often came across for some reason. I never came across AP)

Anyway, the point is when I looked into it last year I did come across milanoo and like everyone else I was thinking about putting an order in. Fortunately for me that urge to order from them only lasted like 2 days as I searched everywhere for reviews and saw the horror that is Milanoo.

But I think it's a human thing. You keep searching until you are satisfied you have all the information you need. In some circumstances that can take more or less time. Part of the circumstances depends on your own ability to believe what you are told. If I am researching "lose weight fast", I will probably not settle for the first link I click because of my personal awareness of the issue. But someone who doesn't know anything about health or fitness will probably believe what they read there.

It also has a lot to do with "Google trust". Google is a fucking verb now. People who don't understand how it's search engines work (which is almost everybody, especially since much of the information of how they rank results is secret) would naturally assume that the first link is the most relevant and why would google put it there if it wasn't the best result?

let me back up to that google search. oh hey look, milanoo.com. ooh it's got pretty dresses right on the front. look at all these 4 and 5 star reviews! and it's so cheap and everything looks so pretty. add to bag and enter credit card information! that was way easier than any of that other stuff I looked at!

I'm not denying that "you get what you pay for" but the fact remains that in the majority of "first world countries" specifically America and the UK, we are just so used to everything being immediately available and dirt cheap that it's pretty unreasonable to blame the people who order from milanoo and ebay for not being more suspicious, especially when you consider the age and background of the average lolita (young, high school or some college education and most are not particularly computer or internet savvy).

And that's enough for me, because in my general experience, up until now, if a place is a scam it's usually pretty obvious on the first page. But for milanoo, it's not.
If lolita's were more clever, they'd try to artificially inflate the search ranking of bad milanoo reviews. Get people to link to the bad reviews from a bunch of different sites, and mess with the SEO wording and such. It's what Milanoo is doing.

The only thing that we do as lolitas is psuedo-protect our own within the community by raising "awareness", but that's really all we do. And I'm sure a lot of people would think, "who cares if someone else that I don't know gets scammed, if they're buying to be cheap serves them right." When you've been active on live journal and /cgl/ for a while, you forget about the hundred or possibly even thousands of girls on the fringe, girls who don't use lj or cgl for whatever reason. The type of girls who use "those other forums" where milanoo can run unchecked, where the "is this lolita?/is this against the rules?" threads appear multiple times a day, the septic tanks of the internet where all the worst and most outdated information flushes from the bowels of every Internet Lolita Expert and lies there festering for years.

That's where so many of our lulz cows come from, those other forums. Like that chick who wanted to make "loli-con". They probably do delete them. I went ahead googled Milanoo Review on google just to see what would come up on the first page to get an idea of what a newbie would see without even trying to actually search for legit reviews.

This is what I got
1 Postive EGL Review with no pictures made in 2009.
The rest were all reviews which linked to Milanoo's website or Milanoo sock puppets.

I think that it's naive to believe that milanoo's practices have no effect on you and your life just because you don't buy from them. Maybe it's not a huge effect, maybe you'll never notice it, but it changes thing.

That said, I feel like I just wrote the intro to an awesome loli web comic with milanoo as the villain.

Also, even legitimate sites have bad reviews. twice now I've seen posts on the vwestwood community warning people that Hervia or ASOS were scammers selling ripoffs. Which if you know any of these places, is just laughable.
Also, I know it's hard to believe, but not everybody checks egl regularly, nor is it everybody's first stop. There are plenty of lolitas that rarely go there. Maybe even a majority. I wouldn't be surprised. It's easy for you people that have been following egl and /cgl/ and all the drama EVERYWHERE to think Milanoo is "so obvious" but to people that don't, it's not.

Also IIRC that site wasn't always there on top results. And of course a site like that is mostly negative complaints - people won't go out of their way to post a review on a scammed site if they weren't scammed.

Sitejabber even gives Etsy only 3 stars. So 2 stars seems pretty par for the course. Nobody would ever argue these sites or stores are scams. Lots of places have negative reviews, bitches love to bitch.

but when something IS a virus, I get all kinds of "how to remove X" and multiple sites telling me definitively that this is a virus.

Etsy is hard to review as a whole since there are so many sellers on there and Forever 21 does blatanly rip off design from other places, which doesn't bother me any but it might piss off some people. I like their stuff just fine, but I also usually go in-store to buy stuff.
