is it worth it to buy organic fruits and vegetables?

i'm doing a bit of research and everything about organic farming seems healthier to me than conventional farming with pesticides, artificial fertilizer, etc. I mentioned I was thinking of going to the farmer's market across the street to shop for fruits and vegetables instead of to wal-mart, and my friends say it's "living in fear" and "they are the same." What do you guys think? I'm definitely not a cooking expert, just trying to research ways to eat healthier
