So my hipster organic ecogreen friend from Seattle just finished scaring me about killer BPA chemicals in canned vegetables/etc leaching from the epoxy coating on the inside of the can into the food.

So I figure I'll steam my own veggies then, so I won't die...

Then I get: "Cooking in anything with coatings for non-stick like Teflon gives you super Cancer and AIDS"

Ok. So, Stainless Steel then?

Nope. It gets into the food and gives you high Chromium doses.

Cooking in Aluminum pots is pure evil and kills you within a week... Cooking in Copper/Nickel poisons you...

So I'm left with this: GLASS EVERYTHING OR YOU'RE GONNA DIE.

So I ordered some Pyrex food storage containers and I'm throwing out the Tupperware plastic ones and I found this glass steamer for vegetables.

But Iron does get into the food, though very tiny amounts. Most people are Iron deficient anyway so it works out fine.

BPAs are bad though, even tiny amounts cause mice to get cancer. They banned it in Europe and Canada but America still wants to let the plastics industry make money by poisoning unsuspecting people.

ok, lets handle this one point at a time.

1) cans don't have linings. Additionally, canned food has been around since before WW1. If anyone was going to die from it, they would have by now.

2) Teflon is perfectly safe for boiling. What you want to avoid is high tempurature frying. Boiling is ridiculously low temp.

3) that chromium is chemically bonded to that steel with bonds stronger than the flame any stove in the world can break. Your friend is a retard.

4) Copper/nickel is an essential mineral, and any amount leeched into food through cooking in it your ENTIRE LIFE would equal less than the amount gained from eating a large shrimp cocktail.

your friend is a paranoid idiot with access to too much information and not enough brain to actually understad any of it.

In fact, using only glass will result in some very real problems very soon. For example, even though Pyrex will tell you it's good for most high temperature cooking, you will end up shattering more than a few even under much lower temperatures than you would expect (and they tell you), mostly because Pyrex manufacturing quality has dropped off significantly in the past couple of decades, and it'll be all but impossible to find the Pyrex that your parents & grandparents used for generations without problems.

The BPA shitstorm happened in like 2009. Congress was going to pass some law but it never happened.

The big problem was thats its in plastic BABBY bottles and BABBYs are small so the BPA doses hit them hard and make them Autistic 4channers.

Its also in cans, they spray the inside with it to keep the food from tasting like the can.

not all plastics have BPA, only certain polycarbonates, which are marked with a "6" symbol to identify them.

the BPA scare doesn't apply to canned goods because Polycarbonates must be heated to leech BPAs into food.

so take shit OUT of the can before cooking.

This man is correct. BPAs are many 10 fold more stable at room temperature than they are at 100?C. They are relatively safe; that being said I've personally been warned by a chemistry professor that using BPAs plastic for water coolers would be stupid.

The highest levels of BPA in our tests were found in the canned green beans and canned soup. In Progresso Vegetable Soup, the levels of BPA ranged from 67 to 134 ppb. And children eating multiple servings per day of canned foods with BPA levels comparable to the ones we found in some tested products could get a dose of BPA approaching levels that have caused adverse effects in several animal studies.

I hate to raise another fear but the antimony in the glaze can supposedly leach out, and if it did, would contribute to alzheimers.

Whether it does or not, I don't know (I still use my le creusets) but some shipment of cheap crap enamelled cast iron from china was refused entry to canada some time ago.

I hate to break it to you but you can buy dangerous shit everywhere. Here in CA you are required to label possible carcinogens on products, but you can still sell the product. I'm talking about leather shoes that have these little signs, mugs with lead paint, water bottles, cookware, etc. There is very little regulation on what you can sell; even though we have to have these signs here, people get confused. They think if something would really hurt them it wouldn't be on the shelf, but that's just not true sometimes. Not saying live your life in fear, but do your own research before buying things because the government isn't watching your back on this stuff.
