I can say with some shame that my favorite type of restaurant is nasty, rat infested, hole-in-the-wall Chinese buffet. Fine dining it is not, but when I just want to be fed they are hard to beat, and certainly better than a Cici's pizza or Golden Corral.

Who else has a soft spot for these wretched hives of scum and fat people?

i like them but the quality of buffets vary wildly. it's really hit or miss. in my neighborhood there are two very close to me. one is a mega chinese buffet with sushi, crab legs, and a mongolian barbeque and i thought everything tasted like shit.

another is a dinky little shack with only one buffet table and everything was so good i thought i was in heaven. great stuff when you're stoned.

There is this Chinese buffet near my grandparent's house that serves amazing food. They have duck, all assortments of fish, a salad/fruit bar, sushi, and a place for dessert. Normally I scoff at these kinds of places but goddamn the food is so good. I swear I go back for 5ths of duck everytime.

I don't go for the crab legs but I always see the asians stack them up like a tower everytime they go there. Is there something I'm missing?

There used to be the awesome Chinese buffet on Rt. 9 in Hadley, MA.

It was a small bar. Maybe just 12 dishes. And the rest. also had regular sit down service.

The food tasted good. It was the same kind of good chinese you would get in a nice sit down rest. Not the kind from those big buffets full of obese negroes.

Too bad the owner retired and it closed....

For some reason some of the ones in the UK seem to serve chips, ice cream and loads of other non-chinese food. It's rather odd.

I've seen cheap places in the US that do the same. They'll have french fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, etc. I guess it's to appeal to the casual and because fried food is easy to make not to mention cheap.

There is two near me. One I go to only has the buffet at lunch and its a small buffet, but the food is always very fresh and hot since they only put out small batches at a time. With tax and a soda the total cost of a meal is 7.90. It is a really good deal.

The other is one of those mega buffets with sushi and mongolian bbq, it was pretty decent when it first opened up but now its real shitty and full of dirty black and white trash who live in apartments behind it.

I go to a non-American Chinese buffet. It was so-so, they have hot stations and a grill for dinner so you can get a steak or roast duck and they tend to either have lobster, prawns or soft-shell crab when it's in season.

My folks enjoy the place because of the variety but I just don't care for the place: they lost their liquor license so they can't serve beer, they also have dine-in and hot pot but my family insists on meh food.

I can't even imagine the horror of a American-Chinese food buffet.

Egg rolls, won tons, sweet and sour chicken, sweet and sour pork, roasted chicken on a stick, beef and broc, chicken and mushrooms, general tso chicken, peanut chicken, lo mein noodles, fried rice with vegetables, stuffed crab, shrimp, crab legs, three different variations of fish, more chicken dishes, then there's pizza and roasted potatoes, salad bar with everything you could want, desert bar with cookies, cake and soft serve ice cream, different kinds of soups and sauces and some other dishes I am forgetting. Great value at $6 on weekdays and $8 on weekends. Knock off $2 between the hours of noon and 4.

The reason I do like Chinese buffets on the rare occasion, despite their often being worse than a sit down and order chinese restauarant, is because I love so much of (american) chiense food. So at the buffet I can get some of this and some of that and some of this and that and this and that.
