I have come to the conclusion; based on the totally different results that I get in bars, that many places either water the gin or replace it with a cheap substitute. I am talking MANY.

Is there any /ck/ reader who can confirm or deny this?

Why do people do this, You have a nice clean home that everyone can wreck, liqour for ultimate maximum low price, great music, a balcony to smoke, and frozen hors'durves to feed people. Best off people that cause drama/get buttmad you can just tell them to leave, and they have a legal obligation to do so.

Only the sketchiest of places will bother replacing all their top shelf liqour with cheaper, its too much labor/risk for the savings. Like how much bombay does a bar go through in a night? Like a bottle every month? Its probably variations in the amount of ice in the shaker, shape and size of the martini glass, and amount of lime juice. etc. If you are suspicious at a bar you are a regular at, order it straight.

Of course if it is a restaurant, and they arent mixing it in front of you, all bets are off, the bartender could easily substitute something cheaper, cause he thinks you wont notice, and really most people wont. Ive worked at places where the bartenders said they did that. Mostly to yuppies or pretentious asses for spite rather than financial gain.

Cause you live with people you dont want to hang out with at that moment, or annoy with your friends?

Cause you are meeting people you dont know that well, say from like work, and a neutral location is best?

Cause you live in a town/city with a strong bar culture, and want to hang out with your neighbors, people you dont that well. Or for live music, to play pool, watch a game if you dont have tv, or whatever other like social reason.

Those are the main reasons, besides the creepy guy reasons, or meat market type reasons, which are just bad ideas.

Yeah, I like buying my own handle of Sapphire for $32 and making my own martinis with my own measurements of vermouth and whatever my olive/citrus preference is at the time. I have plenty of nice glasses to entertain and a top-shelf collection at home that I stock along with some contributions from friends.

I made the mistake of getting a martini at a strip club in NYC. $20. They're about $6 where I live in most bars, but it's still so much easier to just keep my own.
