I buy my fish whole. They've been gutted and scaled, of course, but the lack of further processing drops the price to about 6-8€/kilo. And I don't need to stick to salmon and the like, but there's plenty of perch, bream, herring, vendance, burbot, and whatnot else that happens to come up with the nets available. Of course you'll have to get your hands dirty filleting or cleaning them, but that's just a matter of having the proper tools and a little practice.
The last load I bought was yesterday, and a bit bigger since it's the May Day eve tonight. An average shopping trip would be on the lines of a kilo sack o' potato, half a kilo of onions and carrots, half of a turnip, parsnip and celery, scullion, a leek, bay leaves, quarter kilo beef rump roast, quarter kilo pork chuck, whatever fish is on the cheap, a packet of gravlax, a bunt of dill, a lemon, a bag of rye bread, some oranges and bananas, cucumber, tomatoes, milk and orange juice. Price would be around 25-35€ depending on how greedy I get with the fish.
