It may be easier to start with a wine or mead. They're easier than beer, typically speaking, because you just put the juice/water/honey/whatever, add sugar, pitch yeast and ferment.
If you want to make a beer to start, make sure it's an extract brew with dried or liquid malt extract. It's essentially brewing a tea and dissolving your malt, no mashing necessary.
