I regretted it because she was passive-aggressive to the extreme, a hoarder, and extremely judgemental of quiet, private men.
Her food took up all of the kitchen cabinets and all of the shelf space in her garage. I had very little room in the freezer in her garage (forget about the fridge in the kitchen, that was her space and not mine), and would often come home from work to find my meat left out to thaw and ruin because my stuff "was in her way".
I never really fought her over it because I absolutely understood everything that was wrong with her. Her husband had divorced her for a younger prettier woman, and she never really got over that. As she became increasingly alone, as her pretty, young daughters all found handsome young men to hold them close at night and whisper sweet nothings into their ears, she became lonely for someone, anyone to chide and nag at.
I remember near the end of that summer, when her entire extended family came over to eat tacos, including her ex-husband and his new wife.
After that summer, hearing her side of the story over and over, about how selfish and petty her ex-husband was, I finally met the guy, and wouldn't you know it, he ends up being the nicest, funniest, most sincere man I talked to that entire summer. She got so mad at the dinner table that I was being so friendly to her ex-husband. He ended up giving me all the extra beer he had brought over and couldn't finish, and would make it a point to drop by when he knew Sharon wasn't home to give me a new beer to try, or some extra burgers he had from his BBQ.
It was a fun summer. :)
