First off, not all Americans use Kosher salt. Second, Kosher salt is just salt. It is not flavored, it's the same as regular salt in taste. The thing about Kosher is that it comes in larger flakes instead of tiny grains, and can therefore be added to food manually by the chef with a pinch instead of shaken or ground from a shaker, which means the cook has more control over the portion.
