I don't think OP is as concerned about the bacteria as he is about is own peace of mind. It's just the thought of someone's finger being in your food... Plus, depending on what bacteria it is, it really can contaminate food.

Also, it's really not that hard to taste from a spoon.

if the sauce is boiling any bacteria in it would die. Yes washing your hands after using the bathroom is a must, but when you're cooking your hands are supposed to be clean. I dont stick my finger in the sauce but it doesn't bother me, I saw the owner of a restraunt do it once, of course he was also topless, and drinking wine straight from the bottle, but the food was amazing.

I also touch the pizza in the oven to make sure its done, thats the best way for me to tell, is to touch the middle. years of cooking, playing with hot wax, and playing bass have rendered my fingers almost impervious to heat.

The people I eat with at uni are all very nice and helpful, but haven't been immersed in a food-culture (if that makes sense, italian family etc etc) all their lives and thus make me antsy.

I'm afraid they'll be grossed out by something totally normal, or else that they'll fuck something up because they don't have a "feel" for anything in the kitchen and can only blindly follow recipes.

I hate cooking with people. Just let me serve you the food. Stay away.

I am only recently learning to, on occasion share the kitchen. Sometimes there is much that can be learned. I have found that (for the most part) when people are in MY kitchen they make an effort to be polite and helpful, not pushy, and I, when in someone elses kitchen, try to do the same.
