The trips were also partly used to establish the consequences for what happens if they fail to stop Max: First time around you just knew Earth gets fucked by Max somehow, without any proper details. The second trip paints a clearer picture of what exactly happens, while still keeping the most vital parts secret and at the same time answered cleverly some questions that were roused during the first trip, like wtf was up with the moon being half decimated, etc. It also gave a cool new alt. future version of the JLA.
