Why aren't the people raging about Heimdal being black also raging at the blatant disregard of other Norse deities not being anything like their characters?

Thor is not blonde. Thor has no goat chariot. Thor doesn't need gauntlets to hold Mjolnir. Neither does he need to stroke it to make it bigger. Also, the whole fucking think looks wrong.

Why is Loki out before Ragnarok? Why is Loki Thor's brother?

In the few surviving myths we have on Norse mythology, Heimdal was known as the whitest of the gods.

Personally, I think it's a nice modern twist that he's black.

Plus Heimdal was a pretty cool god, he'd probably be okay with a black actor playing him if he still existed.

I'm white, but if a black actor was to play me, and he got the core of my personality perfectly, I'd be happy with it.

Which is the coolest part of the whole Norse Saga.

Thor fighting the World Serpent, Odin fighting Fenrir, Loki and Heimdall going at it, everyone dying in epic ways.

Unless I'm mistaken, there was no Greek/Roman god equivalent.

Try actually readin the norse myth's instead of just copypasta.
Loke was "out" before Ragnarok.
He was only imprisoned after he seriously manage to piss off the gods at Ægir's feast.
So unless the film was set in the time perioud between Ægir's feast and Ragnarok, that argument is invalid. And guess what?
The film is not even based on the norse myth's. It is based on a comic book character that is very very very slightly based on norse myths.

Heimdal actually didn't bother me that much when i actually WATCHED the movie.

The actor was good and he was pretty fucking badass.

It was more the small things that bothered me, thing's like the lack of Thor's gauntlets and belt-girdle, the complete absence of Tyr and the thing that pissed me of most of all was that Odin was implied to have lost his eye in battle, and not given it up of a drink from the well of wisdom.

But over all i think it was as close to the mythology as could be reasonably expected, and i found it very enjoyable.

There are two types of people raging about this.

The first are actual stormfags. Stormfags are worried about what they see as white culture being under threat and as they incorporate Norse mythology into their world-view this makes Heimdal being black extra offensive.

The other type of person isn't actually annoyed by Heimdal being black but at the massive fucking hypocrisy of those defending it. The exact same people who were bitching about 'racebending' in Avatar are also defending this actor choice.

People are upset because it is a case of making a white character black for no reason.

Heimdall is a Viking god. There was no reason to make him black and he has never been portrayed as black in the comics.

It's offensive. Even people who are not Norse Pagans still have these myths as part of their European heritage. If you made Buddha a white guy that would be offensive too (yes even if was a comic book alien Buddha).

No one cared when Nick Fury was cast as a black guy because it wasn't taking a shit on peoples heritage. It also played into the Ultimate universe so it made sense to have him cast as Jackson.

The detractors aren't primarily drawing on the comic to argue their point. They're drawing on Norse myth while disregarding all the other departures from myth in the comic. This is because they don't really object to any of the changes. What galls them is a black presence in a white world.

I love the American gods take, that the gods who came to USA became "americanized" or something, and Odin, who is the wisest and the one of often travels and makes deals, being portrayed as a conman and a hustler.

Shame he killed Thor before the events in the book though.

I didn't mind that Thor wasn't in it, he always gets all the attention and I thought it was nice Odin and some less famous gods to shine for once. Like you didn't see Zeus or any of those guys in either, it was really a lot of fairly unknown or at least not as often used gods, and that was awesome.

In the Marvel Universe, Ragnarok isn't a one-time event. Every time it happens, Asgard resets, and the same gods, giants, etc are reborn, but with mostly minor changes in appearance and personality. So the Marvel Comics'Thor it's just the 'latest version'
