Okay. So fire requires oxygen (air) in order to burn, right?
So why did Aang never airbend the air away creating a vacuum or at least thinning the air around a firebender whenever one of them attacked him?

I don't recall him ever actually being able to create a vacuum. Wind is produced by air pressure being lowered in one area and air from adjacent areas rushing in to fill the void. Therefore his powers are predicated upon not being able to create a total vacuum.

maybe it's just me, but every single time I read a nitpick like this, I see it as humor and not an attack against the show.

I mean most of the time to even know enough about a show to make this kind of nitpick you have to be a fan anyway.

As pointed out to me when I asked the same question: this cartoon isn't based on science or even modern mysticism, it's based on the ancient Chinese elemental teachings. Of course now we know that a moon eclipse has no effect on water WHAT SO EVER same as a solar eclipse on fire, which isn't even an element but a chemical reaction.
