Watchmen is great, but very overrated.

I can't think of any particular collections like it off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone will have some recommendations for a /co/mrade starting out.

Watchmen is one of the best superhero ones.

But try Planetary by Warren Ellis. It' sort of a tribute to the genre.

Watchmen is, in part, about superhero comics. Undoes the conventions of the genre and deconstructs the popular archtypes. I can't imagine anyone getting all of that if Watchmen is the first supes book they read. I mean, seriously.

But yeah, read Planetary. Which is also about comics. Or Flex Mentallo, which is even more so about comics. But still enjoyable in their own right.

I understood most if not all of it. I may have not gotten some hidden timely industry jokes but I understood the cliches and what not they were mocking, as I grew up around everything the comic book industry offered, except ironically enough, comic books. Every animated series. Practically every movie.
