There's an early issue of Batman where the Joker is actually put to death by lethal injection, however it was never officially retconned, thereby making the original Joker technically dead for almost 60 years.

On a related note, The Joker originally died in his first appearance, but in reprints of that issue, a panel was added showing he had survived.

A great deal of the iconic visuals in Star Wars were taken from a french science-fiction comic known as Valerian.

Superman and the Thing are similar in that they're both version of the Jewish Golem, the latter being a much more literal version considering Ben Grimm is a Jew.

The Fantastic Four was initially going to be a horror comic, where Reed would be in immense pain whenever he stretched, the Invisible Woman would have to wear a mask to be seen in public, the Human Torch's powers would go on and off at random, and the Thing would be a traitor.

Max Gaines would often incorporate his anti-smoking views into the comics under the EC publication.

Dr. Strange was often seen as an allegory for people getting stoned, and would often read the comic while high.

I don't remember who, but somebody at Marvel was against the idea of human superheroes that were originally animals. But yeah, Wolverine and Spider-Woman were suppose to be a Wolverine and Spider mutated by the High Evolutionary.

Also, one of Gambit's powers include hypnosis.

That car is also in the first Spider-Man movie. And EVERY movie Sam Raimi has made since Evil Dead. He puts it in everything as a tip of the hat to where he started.

Kind of a personal one but

The building used for the Daily Planet in Superman: The movie was actually the Warner WPIX building, which my father worked at, and the scene with the Helipad was the top of a bank in Manhattan, which my Grandfather worked in as head of security, and was a liaison between the owners of the building and the film crew.

While we're on the subject of superheroes and bigotry.

Superman helped beat the KKK, in real life. In the late 40s, Stetson Kennedy infiltrated the KKK, but found himself at a loss as to what to do with the inside information he had. So he contacted the producers of the Superman radio show, and proposed that the show use the KKK as the villains. He fed them information about Klan rituals and codewords to be used in a storyline where Superman fought the "Clan of the Fiery Cross".

This was a big deal when you consider that at the time the KKK was still somewhat respected, and suddenly they're on one of the biggest radio shows in the US as the bad guys in between storylines about how Superman fights Nazis and how Superman fights Lex Luthor.

There was also a Brave and the Bold story dealing with this same ending, only this time on Earth-2, where that Hugo Strange who fell got badly mangled and had one of his assisstants transfer his brain to a monster man body or something.

Sort of a "common" trivia but still surprising that a lot of people still don't know that Pete here is actually the oldest Disney character of them all (predating even Oswald), and -possibly- (take it with a grain of salt) even the oldest animated cartoon character still in existence in general, predating even the likes of Bosko, Popeye and Betty Boop.

I know there's probably other characters that were animated long before him (though arguably not "relevant" anymore.) but it's just a very funny thought to me that everything animation...even anime, coming from big daddy Pete. lol

Speaking of Frank losing his shit, a couple Spider-Man stories around at least the early 1980's depicted him attempting to shoot down people who did insignificant crimes, like jaywalking. I can't remember where I read this, but an idea that (I think) Chris Claremont suggested to Marv Wolfman for Crisis on Infinite Earths was to have Earth-1 Superman die in battle with the Anti-Monitor, who is then defeated by Earth-2 Superman. After the battle is over Earth-2 Superman realizes that Earth-2 is gone and Earth-1 has no Superman. So he suddenly removes makeup and hair dye... revealing that he had actually stopped aging when he hit his 30's or 40's and just pretended to look old so no one would suspect. Earth-2 Superman would then take Earth-1 Superman's place.

The book Al Akhif and the mad Arab Abdul Alzahred are both fictional, and the creation of Lovecraft. In fact, if you speak Arabic, "Abdul Alzahred" sounds like a really lame parody of an Arabic name and doesn't make any sense.

I own this book. I grew up reading both Archie and the Punisher. On the last page he says he's going to Gotham. I have Batman vs Punisher too. Both are good reads.

On the Simpsons tangent, in the movie's original screenplay Milhouse was meant to basically play the role Colin does in the final movie (the Irish Marty Stu.), and generally was meant to play a larger role in the movie. the subplot basically revolves around him trying "harder" to get Lisa's attention, and he even rescues her (and the others) when their house is burning.

Half the sequence was actually finished (in all the previews, the part where Lisa see's her curtains start to burn that wasn't in the final movie was apart of that.), but at the last minute they changed it to some random perfect kid because they were concerned casual movie goers who haven't watched the show in a long time wouldn't "get" Milhouse' long running crush on her.

Which personally I think is fucking stupid as hell but hey whatever.

Scorpio not being the big bad kinda sucks but at the same time...it'd have been kinda lame having him go out like that too ya know? But thing is that him being the EPA guy was scrapped at a relatively early point in its production, where as the Milhouse thing apparently (a lot of this is explained in one of the two commentaries for the dvd/blue ray btw.) happened late in development and I think it really shows because the Lisa subplot is just completely pointless in the final film. Like, every single review I've read...even the mostly good ones, complain about that. If they had kept it Milhouse, it'd actually serve a purpose of giving Lisa a more audience relatable reason to want to save the town as well as be payoff for people who DO watch the show (and come on, who doesn't know about the Milhouse thing or could at least piece it together easilly? Give me a break.).

With Scorpio its just a loss of a guest character we all love getting to appear again, but by changing Milhouse I think they basically made 40% of the movie pointless filler when it could have served a purpose. Its so stupid.

I mean, even if you're going for just fluff comedy I can't think of anyone who'd want to trade a funny--as-hell Milhouse we've all known for like 20 years for some cutout we won't ever see again.

Uhg I'm ranting, but what a waste.

League movie's only two saving graces for me were Captain Nemo and his awesome techno swag, and Dorien Gray but other than that the comics are far superior.

And they're so different story wise that you haven't spoiled anything for yourself if you watched the movie first.

I think these clips were sort of one of the rumored holy grails of fandom, but so far nothing's ever surfaced so...actual legit clips of him doing the Joker don't exist as of now sadly.

There is an old rumor though that the Curry voice makes a cameo appearance in "The Forgotten", but its never been confirmed. It could be Conroy trying to be the Joker for a moment for all we know.

It is a good read and if you're well versed in literature you'll be bombarded by the ton of stuff that Moore crams in.

There's already two volumes out while the third volume only has a single issue remaining which would probably take another two years before he releases it. He will have a hard time referencing 2009 culture into it, but five bucks that V will be in it.

Dwayne McDuffie did the writing for the Back to the Future comic that was based on the cartoon version. Some of them were adaptations of episodes (like this one), and some were exclusive to the comic.

Oh, and this cover was drawn by Gil Kane, best known for his Silver Age Green Lantern and 1970's Spider-Man artwork, among many other things.

I'm making the assumption he (nor Ralph really) wouldn't be written as absolute extremes of being stupid but actually written well.

Which is why I say it's too late because unless they gave it to completely new writers (which would be a gamble in itself), that's probably not possible these days. Even if they didn't use Wiggum but ANY character including Krusty or Troy if Phil had theoretically not died they'd probably be written borderline retarded these days.

Actually they were just as dumb as any average family in Springfield in the much earlier years. Ralph certainly didn't start out like that at all. Remember, they ALL took the stupid pill after a number of years. No one escaped.

He could almost be like the embodiment of 90s manchildren who have trouble letting go of their childhoods while getting bombarded with some of the more craptastic aspects of adult life, since he's been seen as such a babyish whimsical character for so long. Personally I wish they let Milhouse just go in that hotair balloon with his uncle in that one episode and just started a series with him going on crazy adventures and being his generally idiotic derpy self around the planet. I really don't agree. He wasn't like that at all in I Love Lisa and many of the episodes after that where he had the brief moments. he was mostly depicted as either aloof and lost...or just slow at worst. The more retardo crazy moments really started showing up in season 9 in the episode where Bart's his friend for a day. Thats when he got the blank stare and all that stuff.

These days actually they seem to be going with the super sanity meta bs thing.

I dunno, a 20 something year old that sort of acts the same way with some minor changes (since he's not a kid anymore) sounds pretty funny to me, and I thought the point of a spinoff was to take a tertiary character and expand their concept rather than just keep them exactly the same, but I'm just having some fun. I'm not taking this nearly as seriously as you seem to be so I'll just stop.

The point I guess was just that there was a lot that could have been done with a lot of tertiaries in that show and I agree, so its just a shame that its too late. I can't help but wonder though what a live action Krusty show would have actually been. Like, would it have been a mock-tv show or something with an actual narrative...and would everything be made more "real", or would it be just a live action version of the cartoon. That's kind of a batshit idea actually the more I think about it.

Well Cyclops' visor is kind of "subtle".

Before Mark Millar got his big break in Authority and Superman: Red Son, he wrote Superman Adventures, a spin-off comic from Superman: the Animated Series. He was even nominated for a best writer Eisner for his work that series.

It'd be weird to think of Millar writing kids' comics if I hadn't read them for myself. They're pretty great.

The DCAU Adventure comics actually has one of my favorite one-shots. The 17th issue of the Batman one, where he (unknowningly) meets Joe Chill. It's very poetic, I wish it were an actual animated episode or real comic canon.

Superman Lives was a Superman reboot that famously crashed and burned. Tim Burton was signed on to direct, Nicholas Cage was signed on to play Superman, and one of the writers who did a script treatment was Kevin Smith. Apparently the project burned through scriptwriters pretty quickly and ended up never going anywhere, because the producer made a bunch of bizarre and impractical demands and anyone with any sense left the project.

Sort of. The screenwriter from X2 was originally going to write it, and he later said that his original plan was to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga. That script never actually go written, though, because he was working on Superman Returns instead.

Abdul Alhazred isn't a real name, it just sounds like a real Arabic name. Lovecraft made it his pseudonym when his earliest writing. You can tell it is fake because the name isn't grammatically correct.

However in the 1970s publishers did produce many, many different versions of the Necronomicon and marketed it as real. This is where the confusion comes from. Some publishers did a good job, others just took random Persian text and copy pasted it across 300 pages.
