Light Yagami is a japanese-american high school student. Intelligent as fuck (much more than the original manga, almost Batman-level). One day a neutral demon named Ryuk releases the Death Note and Light finds it. During his first story arc as a Batman villain it pretty much happens like the Death Note manga, concluding in Batman stopping Light for the first time. Doesn't get Misa for a silly technicality but she has no memory now.
However, since they are 3 Death Notes on Earth Light comes back for a second story arc years later. Since Light is smart he probably faked his own death in a really convincing way so Batman suspects there's a second Kira. It is, it's called Mikami Teru and he is using the Death Note from Japan. Once again after lots of mind games Batman stop both of them.
This is when it starts getting weird.
After 2 Death Notes are destroyed Light adquires the power of death itself under different conditions. He starts getting even more crazy but can keep it's cool. He is a sociopath after all, that's their especiality. Since then he becomes a regular Batman rogue.
