The American anime industry shares several traits with the US comic market. Barely floundering on the mainstream's consciousness, and the good stuff being buried in the usual cliche'd shit. Now one of the last major backers of US anime distribution finally decided to cut its losses today.

Did pirating do this? Or is it general public disinterest in anime? Are American comics safe from a similar outcome?

To an extent, in that pirating offers anime at a rate that the physical distributors cannot compete with. Digital distributors can, that's where the market is going. The core problem has always been that Japan is very protective of its products and has been slow to allow rapid overseas sales, allowing a fertile ground for fansubbers to flourish and making anything that comes to the States seem old hat by the time it's finally available.

Pirating anime will pretty much always give you a better product than what official channels are able to provide, due to how autistic the fansubbers are about their precious chinese cartoons.

Also, quite a few of my absolute favorite series (the ones I would actually be willing to pay for) have never been officially localized.

You're on to something. Anime has been becoming less and less accessible for a western viewer in the last decade, there's a lot of pandering to hard-core viewers and niche audience. Too much moe, not enough series like Cowboy Bebop, series that can be appreciated by viewers just about everywhere. The insane elitism of anime fans doesn't help either.

I don't think so, but cheaper prices of digital releases could bring in a lot of new readers.

I don't really see pirating as the main issue. Obviously I can't prove that it didn't influence things but really their business model is just ass backwards and they've tried to sell episodes similarly to the japanese model of expensive ass chunks of a series, rather than a full box set at a relatively more reasonable price.

They also rape you with commercials. Their anime catalog isn't what you'd call far reaching in demographics either. Their best seller is bebop, which is substantially more western than what japan provides nowadays.

The anime industry was literally founded by pirates. Some of the early ones managed to fool themselves with arbitrary codes of ethics but in the end that's all they were. And the people running the distribution companies didn't do shit about it then or now, because they knew if they went after the pirates they wouldn't have any customers left. This has been a long time coming, but it was inevitable all the same.

That and Japan's decades long recession. Used to be the exchange rate meant things could be licensed cheaply. Now, with deflation squarely in place, it becomes more and more expensive for foreign companies to pay even the same price in Yen to license something that, in Japan, hasn't fluctuated at all.

It's been a while since I bought an anime DVD, but trust me it used to be that bad...

For example, when FLCL originally came out on DVD, its six episodes were split up into 3 seperate volumes.

They're going into self imposed collapse. Their shit isn't worth it. I wouldn't pay even 10 dollars per episode for Bebop, and that's one of my favorite shows of all time.

Despite the comments of my 'bad taste" for liking it, I loved Samurai 7. I love the dub, minus the detail of how they fucking dealt with certain areas of the dialogue. Having English speaking characters saying "KYUZOU-DONOOOOOOOOO" makes no fucking sense.

I get it, it's a Japanese series, you don't have to remind me by fucking up the English. But if you didn't, you'd have people crying about how you are being xenophobic of Japanese culture by cutting out Japanese honorfics.

One of the problems, I think, is that there's no way to watch an anime before you buy it. I mean, there's Netflix and Hulu now, but you can't turn on your TV and watch much anime being played.
This is a fundamental difference between Western Cartoon/Comics and animu.
There's essentially no way to tell if you like something without pirating it. So you're expected to go to FYE and pay 30 bucks for 2-3 episodes of something you could "legally" only experience through trailers or synopsis. A movie ticket/rental is a fraction of the cost, in comparison.

The industry has made so many mistakes over the years and probably deserves to fail for it.
I don't think the comic book industry is in the same boat at all. The good stuff is overshadowed by shit, but thats the case in every type of media ever.

I dont even give a fuck anyway though. The only anime I still watch is Gintama and they will never find a way to dub that.

This is utterly false. Japanese prices are worse than American, for fewer episodes. $50 for *one episode* is hardly unheard of. A Japanese complete collection can easily run $2-500. If you're seeing collections that low priced, they're bootlegs from Hong Kong.

French-Japanese co-productions are still on air in some countries, 30 years after they premiered. You know why? Because they are universal and understandable everywhere.

Most people have no idea what Kun or San or whatever mean, they are confused and feel ignored. They won't understand stories with elements of Japanese tradition or culture. You want people in the west to watch more anime - make the translation as western as possible.

See, anime would have a greater reach if they simply did proper translations. The guy went too far with the whole Japanese culture thing, as I have no issue with a story revolving a holiday that's different from the ones I celebrate.

A lot of anime dubs tend to keep attack names, many food items, and other things that do have English words for them untranslated. What comes out is a weird form of English that is just full of weird, unfamiliar Japanese terms.

I'm saying that anime when dubbed wrong has even less appeal than the subbed shit when you are trying to get normalfags to buy the shit.

I put captions on when Im watching TV shows/movies in English because it helps me if I don't hear something and I'm definitely not the only person I know who does that.

Live action dubs are almost always atrocious. I don't know a single person who would prefer to watch a dubbed foreign film over it's original language because they always sound awful and look cheesy.
Unless it's kung-fu that you're watching specifically for the cheese factor, why would you listen to the dub?

That aside I buy the Bleach DVDs as they come out because I like the show. DVDs has the dubs for me, and subs for any weeaboos out there. Even though I still watch fansubs online every week. I will still buy their product. Quite sad Bandai is in a bad way, because they are a big and long lasting company. Wakes you up when you would never thought they would be in trouble.

What we're seeing is big companies seeing their once mainstream domain suddenly shrinking and becoming uber-segmentalized. They don't like it because it doesn't represent the kind of money they initially got into it for.

It's nothing more than jumping ship. Who's at fault? I'd say overexposure in general. Pokemon opened the floodgates to every anime US licensors could get their hands on, and the result was either sub-par idiocy or butchered shows.

I buy anime when I can afford it but recent years have had fewer and fewer series that really interest me. I don't care about the Moe fad at all and just a cursory glance shows that Moe and Gundam were the only things Bandai was really doing in house.

In fact the only show they put out that I particularly enjoyed at all was TTGL and since that aired on TV I didn't feel the need to buy the dvds.

My sister-in-law came over the other day and brought an anime for us to watch. It was this horrid show about a guy cat-burglar who lived with, like, 12 different women (all of them with a predilection toward a certain fetish)

He would steal something every episode just to give it to someone in his, well, I guess "harem" is the word I'm looking for.

It didn't even have any redeeming tongue-in-cheek value like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey. Shit was so fucking bad, but I couldn't make it stop.

Its the FFC and parental special interest groups and censoring that pretty much killed anime in america. When fans of a certain anime series go online and realize they were watching a watered down version of its original source. They will go to what ever means necessary get it. Even if it means online pirating, or fan scans.

One of the few series that rehashed their products again for original score and re-released uncut would be DBZ. Yet only the die hard fans will put up the dough to rebuy the whole series again. It is long past my interest to buy them all over again, and my pockets are emptied from buying them all over again.

I payed 200 dollars for the first season of Ranma 1/2 waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the mid 90's. For less than 20 episodes!

While everyone talks about moe and niche market animes as being a factor, they really are not. Most niche animes are not even released in America any more due to their low profitability. Moe is frequently bandied around with /a/ given as an example, but there are two things wrong with that. One, you're using /a/ as a demographic to prove a point and two, moe is made because it is cheap to produce. Moe is the Canadian flash animation of Japan, it is inexpensive enough that network execs can use it like concrete to fill the potholes of scheduled programming. The industry can just push out cheap dvds of a cheap show, jack up the prices and get the American moe market while additionally advertising it towards girls.

Around 2004, I stopped buying anime simply because I couldn't afford to keep up with it all. The boom of anime and manga in the early 21st century saw the shelves being flooded by anime and manga. While manga is still surviving-not sure about the sales figures-there was NO way for an American anime market to support the sheer volume of series that were hitting the shelves. Piracy didn't help there, but I liken what's happened to anime to what happens to comics in 1994: supply exceeded demand.

Add to it the other issues-piracy, changes in what was being released in Japan, all the other things that have been brought up here in terms of the economics of it-and I'm actually shocked that it took seven years after I retired from my major purchasing of anime for the western end of it to collapse.

Oh yes. Slayers was a really big franchise back in the day, and suddenly the anime world was inundated with comedy fantasy series.

Sorcerer Hunters, Gokudo, Knights of Lamune, Fortune Quest, Sorcerous Stabber Orphan, Magical Play...there was a ton of them.

Most were pretty awful (Fortune Quest is often voted the single worst anime of the 90's by people old enough to remember and nerdy enough to care) and none were as popular as Slayers.

I don't know if it's really the defining trait of 90's anime, but it was a pretty big trend for about three years there.

I like that for once, subs discussion hasn't turned into a shitstorm of weaboo fags proclaiming their undying love and loyalty to the Japanese language. No matter what, if it's not in their glorious nipponese language, then it's an overt bastardization damn it! Just avoid the anime, which is a horrible adaption.

Other good tournament shows include Ring Ni Kakero 1 (boxing) Hikaru No Go (the board game go...no seriously, it's great) and Cross Game (baseball.)

At the very least a couple companies will go on. Funi should be fine for a long while, they have popular series attached to them. Manga's doing well too, I mean sure Tokyopop went under but they've been floundering with weak licenses for years so it's not too surprising. Yen has some good hits and Viz could probably stay afloat with just naruto. Best part of that? Viz Sig line prints a fucking ton of great manga.

It's a shame though, Weren't Bandai gonna finally put out Turn A dvds? I own almost every other gundam they've put out (minus seed, of course), woulda been nice to have more.

Funny thing is that Monkey Magic eventually fell into the same rerun deal that DBZ did. So my Sunday mornings as a child were defined by complete and utter disappointment. I'd have to sit through a shitty Monkey Magic rerun and get my hopes up huge for the next epic episode of DBZ only to see the same farmer get sent to the next dimension over and over and over and over again.

Not really, anime tends share broad design characteristics with whatever the popular style is at the time it is made. For most anime you can usually guess when it was produced with a slight margin of error. It's no different than American shows telling producers to make a show more similar to another one and it helps when animation studios are doing multiple projects at the same time. One of the countless Gundam source books in Japan gave the basic details of how the 14th Gundam Fight went down. It was pretty basic, but it was written by Imagawa (the creator of the show) so it's canon.

Long story short, Domon retired from fighting after the 13th fight, but the other Shuffle Alliance members all returned. Rain represented Neo-Japan instead, piloting a new version of the Burning/God Gundam. The 14th fight went much more smoothly than the 13th, and the country that ended up winning was Neo-China, thanks to a grown-up Sai Saichi who had completed his training in the years between the two tournaments.

If you're ever interested in reading foightin manga, I highly, highly recommend History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. It's a little slow at first but it gets amazing later on as gets stronger. The best thing about it is that it's over 400 chapters long and the main character is STILL getting stronger without being uber god powered.

This isn't stopping piracy. That sucks, but what can you do? Fansubs can do it faster, better, and free.

I'm still baffled that more groups haven't gone the funimation route and just hopped on board with the pirates. Simulcasting episodes as they released gives everyone what they want.

Hulu has already proven that you can pretty much forgo paid TV and still let networks and shows profit through the occasional commercial and non-invasive banner ad.

So, perhaps, instead of being stuck in 1999 when the internet didn't matter and DVDs were still a big deal, Bandai could put on it's fucking big boy pants and set up a business model where they can still profit without charging 30$ for one disc containing 4 shitty episodes.

He's right. It is great.

One of the problems with long-running shows like DBZ or Naruto is that after a while, you can tell that the creator just doesn't care anymore. He's got a contract to fulfill but his heart is no longer in it, and you can feel the enthusiasm go down as the series continues.

With One Piece, it's the total opposite. Oda just seems to get MORE excited as the series goes on, and throws in more crazy ideas and plot twists.

People who have met Oda say he is disturbingly similar to Luffy or Goku: he gets really enthusiastic about EVERYTHING.

If you can read the first few volumes of One Piece, which are honestly the weakest and least interesting, and still want to read more, then One Piece is for you. Manga and anime aren't going away, they're just suffering a reduction in popularity. Remember Marvel in the 90s? That's what's going on. Anime will just be like any other foreign media released in America with a larger fanbase and we'll still see the stuff that fits American broadcast standards on CN. Manga will still be around in a similar state to the comic industry, except more focused on putting out new titles than long runners.

the reason is that anime as a whole seems to pander more and more and more to really really bad anime right now, for example lucky star or K-On.

Every season the list of new shows comes out and it's just another round of identical, boring moeblob crap or shows based on card games. The only current anime I follow anymore are One Piece (which, God help us, has been airing since '99) and the new HunterXHunter series.

I got into anime because it was big on serialized adventure, which was a nice break from the episodic comedy American cartoons usually do. Now most anime is incredibly episodic "cute girls going to school" stuff where hardly anything happens. It's the opposite of what I want to see.

This thread is creepily eerily leaning towards Pro-SOPA with all the piracy talk dooming an entertainment medium.

Do not be fooled that it would save anything. Companies only have themselves to blame for not getting their product out to foreign markets faster then they should have. You cannot blame the fans for not wanting to be left out of the loop on a series released over seas and having to wait 2-3 years for it to be available LEGALLY to the general paying public.

If they only provided more imports to KNOWN foreign distributors in manga/anime on shipping releases. None of this would be a problem. Inclusive companies doomed themselves.

This. DBZ, Naruto, and Bleach all have this thing where they start out strong, then got crappy over time. DBZ took the longest to do this, but it still happened. Bleach and Naruto both started to suck after their first arcs.

One Piece, on the other hand, started out a bit weak and generic (though the anime corrects some of the early manga's writing and pacing problems) but only got better over time. Ten years later, it's amazing, and STILL getting better.

A poorly nutured market.

Anime's appeal was as something which played to the interests of western media and showcased superb animation.

When everyone jumped on the bandwagon in the late 90s and early 00s they licensed every cheap piece of shit that came out and charged an arm and a leg for it.

What was once a fledgling media filled with cherry picked gems from a backlog of three decades was now throwing everything that got animated onto the shelf.

This also paralleled a major shift in produced media from from OVA/Movie and TV Anime to an almost entirely TV anime with far less impressive animation which meant there really wasn't any new anime coming out that could fuel the Movie/OVA hardcore anime market en mass.

Additionally Anime became less Western action oriented and more Western drama oriented attempting to appeal to the burgeoning new market and many new Anime simply just shallowly emulated older anime that did well overseas resulting in a flood of copycats and unremarkable properties dumped on the American Audience.

Anime flourished on TV such as Adult Swim but when the Distributors got greedy and demanded more money, TV networks dumped them the medium became even more obscure.

Around this time Sam Goodies and Game Stops were abandoning their Anime sections and DVD buy back programs forcing Anime into a continually shrinking overpriced shelf in Best Buy and some Book Stores.

It was the Dot.Com crash all over again except there was no necessity for the medium of Anime like there was the Internet so disaster was all that could be expected.

Today Anime in Japan is worst than ever, moeshit as far as the eye can see and the Anime fanodm full of loveshys who think Anime's western appeal has always been about Moe.

Anime went from a niche subset of the Comic Book fandom to something more ales resembling Furries or My Little Pony Fandom.

You can really tell when the creators of each show went past their original planned storyline.

DBZ was supposed to end with Goku beating Freeza. The ending would imply they both died when Namek blew up. Throw in a final page where Gohan has grown up to be like his dad, end of series.

But Toriyama's editors basically drove a dump truck full of money up to his house, and so we got Cell and Buu.

Bleach was meant to be an urban fantasy about Ichigo fighting Hollows in his hometown. Sales were weak, so Kubo changed it all around, added a billion characters and made it a fightan series.

But One Piece never really deviated from its original plan. Oda claims he had already planned out the ending before he drew the first chapter, and now that the series is further along, the long-range planning really shows, with minor subplots evolving into huge events over time.

One Piece just feels like it has a purpose to it, while Bleach and Naruto feel like they're just there to fill a weekly page count so the author can get his check.

I got into anime because of films and OAVs like Akira, Gunbuster, Megazone, and Castle of Cagliostro. I loved the surreal, sci-fi element so much of it had. And I loved the tremendous animation it had. Watching things like Project A-Ko was such a joy in those days.

I don't find that kind of joy in most recent anime, sadly.

What's funny was...Toriyama never meant for DragonBall to go past the Pilaf arc. Every other year, he'd put in messages saying 'It will go on for just a little longer.' Shoot, Piccolo wasn't even supposed to be an alien if the clues before Z began line up. Really, his editors didn't force anything, the editor he had when Trunks came in was lax on him. Toriyama was the one that just let it go on and on because of the popularity.

Originally, Toriyama meant it to be a short manga that lasted about two months, ending when Goku first finds all the dragon balls.

Obviously, plans changed.

The "Z" in Dragon Ball Z was requested by Toriyama to indicate that he was ending the series soon (last letter of the alphabet and all that.) Obviously that didn't take either.

Anime as a medium has become too meta.

Back in the 60-90s Anime was based largely on or inspired by western literature, movies, comics, cartoons and TV shows. It was about experimenting with story telling while abiding many of the placative trends we recognize today.

Near the end of the 90s Anime became about Anime and Anime trying to be like other Anime and be better Anime and copy that Anime that was successful and so forth.

You guys do know that the reason for a lot of the "crappy anime" is the industry playing it safe because they don't have the money to take risks on shows that won't make a profit. So they rely on the only reliable audience they can get money from: moe-loving otaku. Animation needs money to make, and already animators are making shit in Japan because the industries in the tank because of piracy.

So who are the anime studios going to make cartoons for? The Americans who never buy anything and take a huge loss, or the otaku who will buy the Blu-Rays and merchandise of cute moe girls and keep them in business?

Know why Adult Swim "hates" anime fans, to the point of calling them out in bumps? Because when they air anime, it tanks in the ratings because everyone's illegally pirated it so no one watches it on TV.

Fansubbers and pirates don't have to worry about working out licensing deals and paying the original creators and staff to make the shows they get for free. Companies can't compete with that no matter how fast they try to release things. Anime fans are spoiled and will find any reason just to get shit free ("It's not released fast enough! It's not faithful enough to my sugoi weeaboo standards!"). There are streaming options (Crunchyroll, Hulu, Funimation) and paid download (iTunes), but still not enough people go for them despite trying to appease the fans' demands.

This isn't about SOPA. That's a terrible, overreaching bill made by big, terrified corporations and out of touch politicians who wouldn't know the Internet from a fishing net. It's about supporting the people who make the things who like and letting them be able to have a career making things they love.

Eh, it depends on the anime. Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist get great ratings for Saturday night shows, and Kekkaishi has been surprisingly successful for them. And even after 10 years, AS still buys new anime every year.

Yeah, the whole Great Saiyaman thing just feels like a classic case of a writer realizing he's screwed up his story and bailing out before it's too late. He pretty much abandons the plotline after one and a half chapters, and the series is better off.

(The anime meanwhile, gave us like five filler episodes of Great Saiyaman adventures. They were awful.)

One thing I hate are those who complain about the dub. I know people complaining about stuff like 4kids dubs but really I have heard others bitch and moan about a few lines being edited and they have to constantly compare it with he original even tho it's literal 98% the exact same thing, Watching it in English your main language with nearly the same, altered or sometimes improved dialog will not kill you.

I sorta blame AS for this it was pretty much the only channel where you can actually watch anime in English yet in 07 they fucked themselves and CN over and they continuously make jokes about it even on some of t here shows when we all know there not funny.

Not just editing. They rewrote the dialog and brought back the entire cast to re-record their lines. There's also some new animation hidden in the show, colored to look like it's old so it won't feel out of place. It was a Japanese/American co-production. Animation was done by an anime Studio (Studio IG, one of the best) but it was created by CN. It aired in America before Japan, and the US version features a different, more Toonami-like soundtrack.

They made 26 episodes, but only half aired on Toonami because of ratings (they weren't terrible, but IGPX turned out to be one of CN's most expensive original series ever, so it was hard to make their money back with anything but a smash hit.)

The remaining half of the series was burned off at like 2 AM on Saturday nights. This was before Adult Swim aired on Saturdays. It got no advertising, and the only reason they aired the second half at all was because they were contractually required to.

Like I said, the pirates have an unfair advantage in not having to worry about the legal, licensing, printing, and payment stuff.

They don't have to worry about finding advertisers or paying the creators anything, they can just toss it up and not give a fuck, because for them it's a hobby and not something they make a living off of.
