Looking to watch some animated movies that AREN'T Disney or Dreamworks. Seen them all as a kid and as they've come out. Looking to expand my taste. Willing to try anything. I expect great things from you /co/.

I've never read the comic, but beyond the nice animation, Asterix and the Vikings is terribly mediocre.

You've got a fair bit of Don Bluth already, but may as well chuck in Secret of NiMH, All Dogs Go to Heaven and Anastasia.

Waltz with Bashir is worth the watch.

Watership Down is an unsettling must-see.

There should be nobody who loves animation who had not at least WATCHED Transformers: The Movie.
The Japanese have made a plethora of great films, but I have a feeling that's not what you're after. The likes of The Last Unicorn bridge the gap, if needed.

Then there's the comdy series movies: Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, South Park...

Aachi and Ssipak is a really odd film. It's something to check out just because of how different it is for an animated movie. Its plot is dumb but would highly recommend it to fans of good animation and orgasmic action scenes. Really, the action is so goddamn good that it's worth sitting through it at least once.

Can I also suggest some wonderful shorter films? Tale of Tales and The Hedgehog in the Fog by Yuri Norstein are pretty much canonical in terms of classic animation. Aleksandr Petrov's films are basically animated oil paintings and stunningly beautiful. And then you can get lost in Zagreb forever.

Tokyo Godfathers is my favourite. Then Millennium Actress.

While we're recommending Japanese directors I'd also put Hosoda Mamoru in there.

And Toei's 60s films are superb.

It's really sad to say, but there aren't that many gems when it comes to Western animated movies. You're better off with anime. Of course there are a few, and they've been mentioned, but Japan has been so much luckier.

When I was real young I saw a movie on the Disney Channel. It was a Rankin Bass animation. It had the same style as The Hobbit but it was about some real world guy got sucked into a fantasy universe and turned into a dragon and he he ate rocks.

The movie Miyazaki did, that was Lupin, was Castle of Cagliostro. It's considered one of the best early anime films made and easily one of the best Lupin III films.

With Lupin it's really hit or miss. They've been making Lupin III films since the 1970s and still make new ones today every year. Some are awesome. Some are balls. It's totally up to chance.

I think it's just Kawajiri doing what he does best, badass sword fights. I agree it felt a bit out of place with the Matrix( like Peter Cheung's segment though i liked that too) but still enjoyable none the less. Plus it was mean to be a sim program and not the Matrix itself.

Oh, I know they were supposed to be in a program that wasn't the Matrix. But I just didn't get why of all things that program could have be they had to pick something that didn't exactly feel very Matrix-esque.

Yes, they definitely are. Miyazaki directed Castle of Cagliostro, which is widely considered a classic. The storyline is a bit cliched, but the movie is beautiful and Lupin is charming. It's a movie that pretty much everyone can enjoy.

That being said though, Lupin as he appears in Cagliostro is very much toned down. I say this because I have run into people that went into Secret of Mamo (the movie made the year before Castle of Cagliostro) or some of specials from the late 80s through most of 90s expecting the same Lupin that was in Cagliostro only to be disappointed.

I may not have seen most of these movies, but why do I get the serious vibe that /co/ confused most animated films that aren't aimed for a family audience as classics? It's like their idea for quality was merely a movie that broke the norm.

It's pretty widely assumed by neckbeards and weeaboos alike that Miyazaki's effort takes place in the later years of Lupin's criminal career. It would explain why his character is as it is.

And while we're on the subject of Miyazaki, some of his fellow animators went off and made a short film all their own, based around competitive cycling and set in Spain. It's fairly short too, clocking in at just over 40 minutes. Give it a look if you've got an hour to kill.

Although the story or writing may not be amazing if the animation differs from the norm it is usually worth a watch just to see the designs.
There are plenty of family oriented films here though.
