Long ago there was a female chipmunk named Vina who never quite felt right in her own fur. She much preferred scaling high trees and rousing games of nutball with the boys to grooming and berry gathering with the girls. Whereas the females were demure and quiet, Vina was quick with a joke and boisterous. Needless to say not many of the other girls liked her, and a few of the boys found her jokes and her clumsiness annoying.
But there was one boy who stuck up for her, he might have been shorter and he might have lost his temper at times but they had become fast friends nonetheless. Chip was the smartest boy in the small village and the only one who made her feel how the other girls talked about when they mention the other boys. The days they spent pulling pranks on dogs and leaping through trees left Vina feeling good, but at night she was left confused and alone. If she felt like a boy so much, then why of all things did she still want to BE with a boy?
Emotions were never Vina's strong suit, and neither were words. Many days were spent trying to tell Chip how she felt, and many more were spent listening to him tell her how much he could find a girl like her. Those were the worst, perhaps she shouldn't have spent so much time being stupid and wanting what nature saw fit not to give her and just gone ahead and kissed him when she had the chance.
Before the men with cages came. Before they pumped that drowsy-making gas of theirs into the trees, before they took five chipmunks in quick succession, before they took her.
