Hey /co/, the first episode of Motorcity (new cartoon by a lot of the old Megas XLR crew) is free on iTunes. Just thought you should know.

For example in Megas Koop is just a normal guy with nothing better to do other than battle monsters for the lolz. There are only a few episodes where the glorph are important to the plot. This made the monster/robot of the week format work because it was part slice of life and part action. Motorcity on the other hand is about a group of rebels tying to take down a central bad guy to free everyone. So if they try to make every episode a rumored weak point to take down villian>>>oh no its a trap>>>monster>>>villain escapes>>>tomarrow's another day kind of format this show could get kind of old.

The only thing really bothering me is the voice acting, which seemed off at times, and that the pacing kinda refused to slow down, I never caught most of the characters name because the show was so focused on the action all the time. But over all it was great, I really dug the way it looked and it managed to be somewhat lighthearted when It needed to be.

I didn't notice the animation was aided with flash until a couple of minutes in. I really like the style, but I feel they could've used Flash further to create more tween frames. It's clearly inspired by anime, but with the western art style it doesn't need to have the lower framerate anime has. Anyone else agree/disagree? That's only a minor thing that bugged me, otherwise one of the best looking cartoons we've been graced with in a while.

>>35904000 The style of the show prohibits too many Flash aided tweens, a lot of the shapes are designed to work at only certain angles to push the silhouettes to keep with the Robert Valley-esque look, they don't really 'turn' well in space. Tweening many of those poses would cause the character's to explode into a mess (I know I worked on the show and have messed around with some of the flash files.) So it requires a newly drawn inbetween which is done if time allows, or just pop into the next pose as a cheat, being it's a TV show budget, the latter is often the case.

Trust me, the animation quality never goes down. I really don't care much about the story, but the show has so much personality, and the quality in the art just keeps you watching.
Robert Valley helped in the character design, hence the Gorillaz sort of look.
I haven't seen a show with so much quality in years.

Hey, guy that's apparently working on the show.
So, aside from the CG, is this purely flash? Or is it a mix of traditional animation and flash? I'm having a hard time telling.
I mean, you can do traditional in flash, right?

>>35908925 It traditional animation for the whole body, all drawn in flash. for the heads they use symbols to keep all the character on model. I'm sure these symbols were made from 3D models, so you have heads for all angles. There's a lot of cheating, but its mostly digital hand drawn stuff.

When good looking hands/arms/shapes are drawn or animated those will be turned into symbols and added to a library to be used by other animators down the line so they can speed up their animation by not having to draw it again. The faces are a ton of layers of symbols, nothing 3D about them, and are completely hand drawn in some of the fast action sequences. Sometimes symbols won't work and new head parts will be drawn and made into symbols and added to the library as well.
