I think the American church is a terrible place for a young intelegent person to grow up.
And why I think it seems like some of the most hate filled Atheists grew up in Protestant homes
There are very few intellectuals left in the church and I don't think it has much to do with having to be an idiot to believe in god. They indirectly push them out the door.
American Churches are built exclusively around being what are basally humongous alcohol free cocktail parties. And as it happens most intellectuals are introverted. I know that I grew up hating youth group.
I "had to be social" my parents told me. So I was shipped off to what was basally a shallow 20 minute pep talk loosely based on scripture and then 40 minutes of awful music performed by cliquishness people my own age. I was in so many words told my way of doing things was wrong and felt like there was something wrong with me. I over intellectualized things. I was emotionless. I had no heart apparently.
Therefore I had no spirituality.
I've grown up since and Know they were wrong. But it still hurts sometimes.
Because The American church is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator just like any other place trying to get more publicly visable.
And if Christianity is truth like the profess they shouldn't be warping it for anyone.
Chruch goers get so involved in creating a safe place for themselves. Where nothing bad ever happens. Where they can pretend the world isn't burning. Or they lash out and scream at the wounded, sad or lost.
But the church is supposed to be a place for exactly those people.
