Just avoid anything Uderzo did on his own (I guess the first two albums or so are still passable. But after that it really goes to shit fast).
The animated movies are all watchable, but really go down in quality around the time of Asterix in America.
The first two live-action movies are also good. But as soon as Christian Clavier left, that turned to shit too.

>>40714509 Uderzo is such a terrible writer.
He wanted to make a comment about his enjoyment of American Comics and his dislike of manga. And the only way he could fathom doing that was to bring in two different races of aliens at war with each other.
Goscinny would have found a way to work it into the clever subtext of a normal Asterix adventure.
It's painful. Really Painful.

Anonymous
>>40714579 Because they live in France. If you want to get from there to America, just cross the ocean - as they did - but if you want to get to Japan, you have to, well, cross the entire world.
Also, Goscinny is dead, so please, no new Asterix comics.
Anonymous
Quoted By:
The artist is old, and is surrounded by money hungry marketers more than professional caring editors. They let him do that shit because they wanted a controversy. They were having some legal issues with publisher at some point, too, wonder how that went. I think I heard about a possible new artist or writer in the future (the classic assistant taking over his master's job deal). It worked well for Smurfs and Lucky Luke so I may give them another chance.
Anonymous
>>40714579 Uderzo is vaguely racist toward Asians iirc. Same reason Asterix didn't went to China even though he went to India in a late album.
China would definitely work better than Japan given the time period by the way.
Anonymous
Recent Lucky Luke also hasn't been good from what I hear. I mean the writing was still okay while Morris was still drawing and overlooking the whole thing with various writers coming and going, but after his death... I mean, why would you even consider anything canon here, when the entire original creative team is 6 feet under.

>>40714658 the problem with new creative teams is that they fear to add new stuff, so the books go in eternal recycling mode, with the same jokes and same characters. Lucky luke featured the Daltons as main threat far too much, when most of the best books didn't have them at all.
Also Morris made some terrible books too. Le ranch maudit is terrible. La ballade des dalton is terrible. Many of the short stories were terrible.

I intend to give my second cousins the first 28 Asterix books. birthdays, Christmas, doing well in school, any excuse I can find. I originally planned on doing them in order of publication, but I figured it'd best to give them Asterix at The Olympic Games this year, even though it comes later in the series (I've got them up to Asterix & Cleopatra). For those who don't know.
Clifton is a ex-airforce colonel, who gets roped into all kinds of adventures.
Usually it's either a murder mystery à la Agatha Christie, a James Bond type spycaper or old fashioned policework akin to "The Professionals".
He's a proficient marksman, a capable detective and never squeamish. Unlike say, Lucky Luke, he's easily distracted by the fairer sex though. Later albums usually have at least one girl for him to save.
Also he leads a group of boyscouts, is kinda weirdly in love with his vintage MG TD and keeps a ludicrous amount of cats.
The only constant supporting character is the stern housekeeper Mrs Partridge, with whom he's constantly at odds with.

Also, they censored parts in their releases of Largo Winch.

But the female legionnaires looked pretty hot.
