Christmas Eve, and it's time for your gift, /co/. Nintendo Power was a part of my childhood, and as many of you know, it ceases publication this month with Issue #285. So I'm going to dump every Nester comic (except one). Join me, won't you?

We of course start with the "Howard & Nester" era, which ran from until Issue 25. Howard, for those not knowing, was a caricature of Howard Philips, Nintendo of America's president at the time.

Quoted By:
I should note that despite being a comic, Howard & Nester were considered ADVICE from the magazine, since they usually offered some gameplay tip for a title.
Nintendo Powanon !/OeRZ2quxw

Starting with Issue #3, the comic was now a two page feature!

>>44316386 It's not without merit. Megaman games tend to have a boss who takes twice the damage from the Buster compared to the others, as a "go here first". For instance, in Megaman 1, it's Cutman.
In Megaman 2, four of the bosses take double damage (or 4 units of health on the USA's "Normal"): Airman, Flashman, Quickman, and Heatman. Since Megaman bosses only have 28 units of health, tackling those guys means you'd only have to hit them 7 times to win, as opposed to say, Metalman's 14.

By any chance, who drew these comics out? The style looks relatively Japanese, but this was an American produced comic. Unless they outsourced the art to Japan.
Nintendo Powanon !/OeRZ2quxw
Nintendo Powanon !/OeRZ2quxw
>>44316923 If memory serves, a lot of NP's stuff was outsourced to Japan. Even the magazine's format, early on, was "Japanese" in style because of this.
While credited, I can't cite which artist SPECIFICALLY worked on Nester.

Cute, the way it plays up Nester as the dopey dad who won't let go of the past. But... that's a bit too Preston for my taste.

Despite my trip, I didn't subscribe to Nintendo Power much, if at all. The only time I can remember was when I wanted to get the Zelda Collector's Disc for Gamecube, which had the requirement of getting a subscription. But Nintendo Power, it was always -there- when I was a kid. I had friends with subscriptions. I saw back issues at my local library. I flipped through the catalogs, I listened to Smashing Live. Strategy guides at Blockbuster, going to then new concept of a website at
Nintendo.com ....
But Nintendo Power, in all its shilling, campy, corny glory was a constant. With something like that, you sort of take for granted that fact. It's always there, so you don't appreciate it that much. It's not until something is gone that you really get hit with how much it meant to you.
Nintendo Power had a great run. 285 issues, 25 years, that's a long time. That's older than most posters on this board!
Nintendo Powanon !/OeRZ2quxw
>>44319405 And so, we end the final Nester comic, from the final Nintendo Power comic.

ZIP FILE TIME
Included in this zip is every image I posted in this thread, right down to my mixxed up numbering system. Also included, as a freebie, is Tom Preston's horrible fanart wherein he has Nester reunite with Howard to complain about them modern games and Link's hair no longer being brown.
http://www.mediafire.com/?61mdtvtneerd7dy As an added christmas bonus, and unrelated entirely to Nintendo Power, I include the zip file to a previous story time I did: The Shogun Warriors Coloring Book, starring Dragun!

>>44316923 >>44317049 During it's early years, Nintendo Power was assisted by Tokuma Shoten, As a result the mag's design was somewhat influenced by Japanese gaming mags of the time. Lots of visual noise and neat illustrations littered about.
As for the artist It MIGHT be Benimaru Itoh, who worked on the Star Fox comic, the styles are very similar.
