No big bads left for America means the Abrams movies are about the terrorist activities of a few stragglers facing our redefined ideal, like that Romulan thing in the 2009 movie, or whoever the hell Cumberbatch is in Into Darkness. (If he's not Khan, and really a rumored dark element of Spock, it'll be a great, 'what if we're our own worst enemy' thing)
Far off future means our enemy has to be our fragile existence on the planet in the grand scheme of things.
Maybe round it off with the bad guys actually destroying Earth.
