Exploring the science behind technology

Open Computer Science is the latest event to grace Manchester's Madlab. Jacob Clark, the organiser, is keen to open up computer science, and electronics to anyone under 18, using a similar approach to Code Club : http://www.codeclub.org.uk

The goal of the group, run by volunteers, is to help children learn more about the science behind technology, by using cost-efficient components in a practical application.

For their first event, Jacob and his team had put together a series of quick projects, with each project building on the success of the previous one. Starting with a simple circuit, which lit up an LED, the class quickly learnt about the concepts of electronics.

By the end of the day, the group had successfully made a basic lie detector, using only a small breadboard full of components.

The class was made up of 11 children who had paid to come to the lesson. Jacob is keep to keep the courses in the pocket money tag, and the full day course cost £3.

This type of event is excellent for offering hands on time with the equipment and with plenty of experienced helpers, learning how to diagnose faults. Jacob has another event planned, which will take place in November, and will introduce the class to Arduino. The team should be very proud of their success so far, and it hope that it continues : http://opencomputerscience.co.uk
