alright /adv/ i asked earlier today if you wanted to know how to build a puzzle ring. the resounding answer seemed to be yes.

so here it is. how to make a silver puzzle ring for under $20

this may take a long time to type out as im making this as i go.

you will need a soldering iron. really just about any will do even the cheaper ones and some silver solder and flux.

a rubber or wooden hammer *you can sub in a block of wood.*

any round object the size you want the ring. im using the wooden rod pictured.

a couple of pens, knifes, anything really to help you shape out curves. ill show in more detail what i mean later on in this list.

YOU will need one roll of heavy gauge silver wire *18 gauge or lower*. you can buy this at most hobby shops including hobby lobby. its usually right with the jewelery findings *get solid sterling not plated.* it usually runs around $10-12
im using 4 different colors of wire to make it easier to follow.
also you will need some wire cutters as well.

step one is pretty obvious.

cut the roll of silver into 4 equal length pieces at this time spend a little time getting it all straight and flat. its not going to stay that way long but it helps.

now here is the closest thing to a special tool you need.

get two identical pens, AAA batteries, really any 2 round objects about the size you want half of the size of the ring. and tape them together.

in this case its just two pens held together with scotch tape.

i realize how blurry this pic is but the next one ought to clarify the situation a little.

you want to bring the two wires together. one end WILL cross and one end will not.
but you want to pinch it with a pair of needle nose pliers like this

from left to right they are.

1 heart *pictured in op*

2 twist.

3 rounded

4 pointed.

its the exact same steps. the only difference is you bend two humps into one of the rings instead of the twist. i mean that is literally it.

FUCK i forgot to photograph that part. its the exact same bend as the third ring but opposite.

when your done the first two rigs will be in the middle and the third and forth rings will be on either side of the first two.

ok so after it all matches and you have it about the right size you need to get a pair of wire cutters a dremel tool or a good pair of scissors and snip the wires as such

now you will solder and sand down the solder on every ring individually.

i only have 2-3 inputs on this. you are not a professional ring maker. any non lead based solder i repeat this NON LEAD BASED SOLDER will work just fine.

my solder looks like shit for this one because its painted aluminum and it doesn't want to stick.

if you do not know how to solder there are a million how to-s on youtube and also on instructables.

you shouldn't have to force ANY of this. it should almost fall into place.

now once its together again your basically done.

this one solved super easily and fit back together great.

now is the last step. you need to harden the silver.

the easiest way to do this is to put the ring back on the rod you used to size it and beat it with a rubber mallet. about as hard as a dead blow. i mean dont pound it but a good solid tap tap tap for about 20 min should make a lot of difference.

Ya know OP, you should look into color anodizing for the aluminum wires. You wouldn't have to worry about painting it, making easier to solder.
