I bought a pair of 501's shrink to fit a few days ago, been wearing them in. I bought em long and wide, as per pretty much everyones suggestion.

I've heard about one million different ways of going about shrinking them, sitting in a warm tub with them on etc.
But my main question is there a point to wearing them in for a few weeks before i shrink em, or can i do it right now?

Shrink first, if you get any fades/honeycombs, they will shift after shrinking. Mine didn't shrink that much after tub. They were newer, selvedge 501's, hencho en Mexico. I would recommend buying true to waist.

The temperature of the water needed to really do any shrinking is a bit hotter than what you would want in contact with your skin. There's also no point in wearing them out before a shrink since overall dimensions will change. You want to wear them down after shrinking them to the size you were hoping for.

I have a similar pair. I bought the waist in 34, which are usually a tad big, depending on the brand/pair. Have you tried shrinking again? one guide said they could possibly shrink again, although not as much.

Soak first. Although, I would have gone true-to-size in the waist, as any shrinking you experience in the waistband will stretch back out in a few days.

This isn't quite true. Dry denim will shrink in water, end of sentence. It simply shrinks more the hotter the water gets.

No, haven't tried a second shrink. I'm glad they didn't lose much color (hardly any, actually) after the first shrink. I may try a second shrink in scalding water, and just throw the jeans in. Come back later, put them on and wear them until dry. I could stand to lose another 1/2 inch in the inseam as well, although then I wouldn't be able to cuff them unless I wore them kind of low rise (which I would want them smaller)

You don't need to wear while shrinking people just do that to set creases soon.
In my experience you can get more definition if you wear them dry and crisp(after shrinkage) than if you let them form to you. But if you like smooth vintage wear patterns you can leave them on.
