My father made his money by starting a new business, getting vulnerable people to invest, and then folding and running to a new state.
He threatened my grandparents (my grandfather had been on Juno beach on D-Day btw) that he would beat up and abuse my mother, sister and myself if they didn't give him money. In the end they gave him everything: their money, their pensions, and their home. And he still abused us.
It wasn't the abuse of my mother and sister, or (occasionally) of me that stuck. It was the fact that I had to watch one parent raping another because I was being taught how to behave as a man.
And while I'm at it, when my mother finally managed to leave him and run and hide, it was fucking social services that made me see him regularly until I was 18 because apparently a boy needs his father. I still remember being repeatedly told off for not hugging him and wanting to stay the other side of the room.
so maybe I am a dick. I think in this case I have a bit of justification.
