I know this guy (doesnt rly lift, just plays basketball) who claims michael jordan maintained 4% bf throughout his career.
This instantly seemed impossible, but i though i'd check just in case.
It definitely doesnt look like it...

Could he hav maintained 4% or can i laugh in this guy's face now?

Absolutely not. 4% bodyfat requires diuretics/water flushing protocol to "dry out" and can't be maintained for more than 8-12 hours.

yes, totally possible. He likely fluctuated between 3-6%.

I got a baseball (NCAA) buddy who consistently measures around 5% and he's all power workouts, if he did more endurance stuff he could probably drop even lower. Another XC runner sticks around 3% no trouble. Those guys get UWW from the uni.

MJ was measured at 4% at one point, doesn't mention whole career, doesn't mention method of testing.

Bullshit, I want sources.
Male essential body fat is around 3%, depending on training and lifestyle. For a lot of athletic performance you see XC runners dropping down to 2% for performance and never go above 5%.

can't find shit backing up my 2% number for XC athletes. Forget about it. hard to be that precise anyway, your assumptions have to be really good

That being said, these guys found at least one guy under 2% (range=1.3–23.0%)

I can't find any longitudinal studies showing a maintenance of low bf%, or for basketball bf% maintenance. However, based on those sources from earlier... maintaining 4%bf wouldn't be hard under intense exercise... such that MJ would have done for a majority of his career. His whole career? No, probably not... but when he was with the bulls? Yea, probably for 9months out of the year he was 4-5%, with that number creeping slowly up as he got older/slower. Definitely not his whole career, but remember... NBA basketball means a whole hell of a lot of exercise, your body will adapt and become more efficient in a lot of ways.
