I can say this much from personal experience: I've used a belt for working sets ever since I started doing 225lb 5x5 or better on squat. Whether it marginally weakens my core or not, there's just too much risk involved when you have that much weight on your spine. Why risk fucking yourself up for life over a few lifts if you're not in the sport (or any sport) competitively? That's all I use the belt on though, and I do GHRs instead of Deadlift, so your mileage may vary.
