optimum is 4 lbs gain in a month
2 lbs water and fat
2 lbs lean mass
1 week on a good diet should get you 0.5 lbs

I was thinking 0.5lbs lean mass gain per week with 0.2lbs fat gain per week on surplus, and 1lb fat loss with about 0.1lb lean mass loss per week on deficit,

what the other guy said, 7,700cal in a kilo of fat, you do the maths on that

as far as muscle, maybe 1lb a fortnight if you're a beginner, less as you go on, it's unlikely you'll gain more than 40lbs naturally in your life

you gain as much fat as the fat makes up your surplus. say its all fat, 55gx7 = 388g's per week. the rest is non fat mass. so basically works out like 1lb per week of fat and the rest muscle. obviously it depends on your macros and timings. the idea that 50% of it is fat is a generalisation of the worst case scenario.

The gains on the surplus will depend on a wide range of factors: routine, genetics, protein content, where you're currently at in terms of progress (someone new to lifting will probably put on more muscle than someone who's been going for a couple of years), the times of day that you eat, and so on.

This one always irritates me. Lean mass is everything other than fat, water included. Where do you think the water goes, if not in your muscles? What do you think muscle is made of if not mostly water?
