Sup /fit/,
Im feeling kinda depressed right now. i was wondering if you could give me some life advice. First of all, i came to fit because i don't really have anybody else to go to atm. My mom is an alcoholic/ workaholic/ drug addict and i haven't seen or talked to my dad in years. I'm about to be 16 in a couple of days and honestly i don't know how i should be preparing for the future.
tl;dr: what advice would you give yourself at age 16.?

Serious advice: Find something you like doing and become really, really fucking good at it. It doesn't have to be lifting, despite what /fit/ might tell you (could be music, a science, anything respectable). Ignore anyone who discourages you. Use libraries, local universities, the internet, whatever resources you have. Set aside a large amount of time every day to get better at whatever it is you want to become awesome at. Set goals and achieve them.

Even if whatever you get fantastic at doesn't end up being what you spend your life doing, it will still teach you discipline and impress the hell out of people.

Also, get a job. You're old enough. Don't settle for a shitty job, either. Once you've found your niche, seek employment that relates to it. For example, if you decide to pursue computer programming, get an internship as a coder.

Disregard females. Acquire currency.

Reality is perception. You can understand people way better when you understand perception is subjective. Because of that we are all alone. Nobody can ever truly have your perception of every event you see.
So when there are misunderstandings, or B.S. going on between people, it is never that one is right and one is wrong. Both had a totally differant perception of reality.

Study, make good grades. Do not be concerned with popularity and shit right now....Right now is about setting yourself up for success later in life.
Study, make good grades, go to college. It does not matter if you can not decide what to major in. Just pick something, knock out the basics, then change majors if you find something else.

To you OP, let me just say this. Depression is tough, I know it is, I have it. Have I sought any medical treatments or anything of the sort? No. I couldn't afford it. So I developed my own strategy.

1) Do the things you love doing, find something you're good at and be the best at it.

2) Always have an outlet for your sadness (video games, drawing, music, etc.).

3) Never depend on anybody but yourself for happiness. People and objects are of fragile nature and of fickle constitution, they will let you down, but only YOU can decide if you let yourself down.

4) Willpower is one of the strongest forces next to passion and love, use that to your advantage.

And another thing OP, the price of freedom is steep.

Sometimes I just take my dog for a really long walk or go hiking or something. Constructive alone time works wonders, and you feel like you actually did something and accomplished something instead of looking back at the 6+ hours you spent staring at the computer screen

If something looks interesting I go and try it. It helps. Find volunteer opportunities you have a little bit of passion for and maybe meet some people. I joined my local Red Cross. Think about what looks good on college applications and would make you look unique from other students. I limited my video game time to only an hour or two on weekends without an assignment being due the following week it helps keep my mind focused on school and not day dreaming about what I am going to do next in that game.
Try and get a job also. Money is great for making things happen without the need for parents.
Continue lifting. It pays off.

I took a lesson from an old music teacher today, and I believe it's right to apply it relationships also. He said, "The more you practice, the more you find out about yourself. The first time you practice you think, that was pretty good. The second time, you think, 'wow, that wasn't as smooth as it was yesterday.' Well in fact, yesterday was just as bad, you just didn't notice it. Practicing means you're becoming aware."

In my awareness, I'm learning, not to take a fine-tooth comb to everything, but to open my receptors to what loved ones are telling me. I'm also learning that, the more I have going on in my life, the less that I have to worry about what's going on in her life. I have a final year of school coming up end of next month, an extended vagabonding trip starting this weekend, and my friend (who is having his own relationship problems) offered to put me on the bill with him at his band's next gig, if I come up with a 30 minute set-list.

Most importantly, I'm learning that another person's decisions ARE THEIR OWN DECISIONS. Just because I am affected does not mean that I ought to have a definitive say, or should, conversely, feel bad about it.

Anyway, this turned a bit long-winded, but I felt I ought to let you know that I'm doing well and appreciate what you've done.

Find stuff you're interested in and learn about it/be good at it. I'm interested in languages/business/fitness, so I'm always googling about that or hanging out on websites/downloading books and reading about it
find friends who like what you do but who also have different interests, so you get exposure to different things
also, one big key to confidence is to stop giving a fuck what others think. I'm not sure why I stopped but it happened like 11th grade, I just started getting more confident. Lifting helps

College/education is vitally important if you want to climb out of your socio-economic strata.

High school doesn't mean shit unless you want to go to a great undergrad.

If you don't do too hot in HS you need to go to community college and kick ass.

Elementary, Junior high, these don't mean a goddamn thing. But you'd be a fool not to learn how to do math/write.

The trick to school is knowing when to bust your ass and when to coast.

The problem is that mediocrity can be seen as temporally relative. Example: Neil Armstrong. First guy on the moon and all that shit, but currently irrelevant. Mediocrity, glory, failure...these themselves are social constructs and have little bearing on our present experiences as human beings, unless we let them.

However I will say for a social failure, life is very difficult. Food is hard to come by, social ostrafication, etc. But what is the real failure here?

Perhaps it is the failure for our system to allow these human beings to live like human beings should. Perhaps it is the delusion of individualism that we love so much in America.

There are many factors that go into making a person "successful". It is never the willpower of the individual alone that causes a social success. For even a success to be observed as such, others must exist.

I argue that all human lives have intrinsic value in that they are human lives. If everyone was doing something they loved, their place in the race would be irrelevant. When you are resonating in the present moment, you cease to have thoughts and concerns about stuff like your social rank.

Keeping with the Neil Armstrong analogy, yes he's a winner in our society. But when he stepped off that lunar lander and looked up at the planet earth, I bet that was the last thing from his mind.

He was resonating in that moment...he was experiencing everything to the greatest of his abilities-- taking it all in-- completely immersed in the present. He would have been stupid not to.

In a roundabout way, our social constructs of glory, mediocrity, and failure exist to moralize and enforce social norms. But if you're doing what you love and you're resonating in your present experience, then none of that shit matters at all.

In fact, it fucking sucks to be constantly immersed in that kind of thinking. You're always worried about the finish line and when you get there, chances are you're dead.

One of the many amazing things about that day is I can often go back and experience it again in my mind. If I listen to a familiar song or I see a familiar sight...It's not quite the same but the memory is so vivid and soothing.

Imagine what it would be like to live like that every moment of every day. They'd probably call you Jesus or Buddha.

Ultimately I suggest that for you to understand what I am talking about...you go out there and you look for those things that can get you onto a resonant frequency. You'll never forget it and you'll understand all this stuff I am talking about if ever you do find it.
tl;dr- Do what you love. Experience what true freedom is like. Make good friends. Love a good woman (or man) that loves you back. Live in the present. Glory, mediocrity, and failure will fall to the wayside and reveal themselves to how irrelevant they really are as imaginary constructs.

I'm naturally a bit too introspective, but understand what you want and need and what those who are around you want and need. Do you need attention? Safety? Control? Do you need to be the victim, the hero, a loner? When you understand yourself you can work with yourself and understand better how to reach your goals.
