Signing up for colleges, what major should I pick?

I was thinking Business, because its a broad major and I've heard I can do many things with it but I just wanted the opinion of the only board I frequent.

/fit/ related because its important to ones mental health to be a well rounded individual thus having a good education/job is probably a good thing

Math's not exactly my thing.
From other threads I've seen on here apparently everyone does Biochemistry, Engineering, or Computer Science. I'm more of a creative person, and I've always been good at art, writing, and languages. But I don't want to be a starving loser with no money my whole life so I've been considering other majors at which I might actually be somewhat good at and make decent money at the same time

buisnes majors don't have a much higher average starting salary than basic liberal arts majors. Do something you can get paid for, engineering/chemistry/biology. If you want to go to grad school, you can always pick an easy undergrad and try to get into law school, but you better be good at the lsat or you won't make any money.

IT is like the middle grounds between Computer Science and.. Business/Communications. They do some programming, but they're usually the middle man between the two.

I personally don't fix computers (though I can). I am a web developer and also do things like graphic and web design as well.

IT jobs will ALWAYS be in demand. There's such a broad range of places you could go into: programming, the art side of it (design), project management, etc. And let's face it, EVERY company can benefit from having someone with computer knowledge working for them.

Software engineer here. Comp sci pays well, but is unsexy. Business is great, IF you're at a good school. If not, don't bother, get a more employable major and go back for your MBA.

If you're not good at math you won't make money. Period. If you're not going to college for money you're an idiot. Go get a library card, sit in on classes to learn what you love, and go to HVAC school so you can pay your bills.

This. The problem with our educational system is you're letting an 18 year old (you) make vital life choices for older you. You can always go back, but student debt is forever. Carpentry or HVAC will pay MUCH better than most liberal arts degrees.

Yes I would recommend it. I'm not a "math person" either, but I knew that I was smart and could learn so I committed myself to it, worked hard, and never regretted it.

Early in college I learned that engineering is top tier in terms of job security, job availability, and a decent salary. Plus, you get to learn about the laws of nature and make awesome things that solve the world's problems and make people's lives better.

Using a computer is far different than being able to write software and do so in a manner that's efficient AND can be done in conjunction with other developers. You don't know what you're talking about, unless your little brother can calculate the efficiency of algorithms and write them in a clean, extendable manner.

Chemical engineer here. Lower-level upper-level math courses (if that makes sense, think calc I) really aren't that difficult to understand if you put even a little effort into it. Calc II is a bitch though. That said, you should be able to figure it out based on Calc II. After that shit gets kind of abstract. Mechanical would probably be the "easiest" engineer that would get you into the broadest field. MEEGs make bank too because they can do all sorts of shit. CHEGs also make bank because they can go into a ton of fields but most get pigeonholed into process control and whatnot. Just try a semester in a field that interests you and see how it goes. But remember, everyone makes fun of business majors. Even kinesiology majors.

tl;dr math isn't hard with formal classes. Do what you want.

Business UNDERGRAD is meh. Econ or math, with an MBA, will make you bank.

HOWEVER don't do econ that doesn't require math. Most grad programs (and you need grad in econ) will not even accept econ majors that don't have heavy statistics and calc in their transcripts.

All that changed was they added another 800 point writing section. Which is basically the same as the verbal except with an essay question at the beginning where you have 25 minutes to write like, a page and a half.
Most schools (at least the ones near me) don't even really care about your writing section, unless it's absolutely dismal, so a lot of times people will still give the out of 1600 score.

I go to a school where the philosophy teachers are some of the most prominent people in analytic and language philosophy. There are also a few extremely renowned continental philosophers here. Taking their classes are nothing like just reading the books. If you want to participate in modern philosophy you pretty much need to take these classes.

It all depends on time and place. Australias richest man under 40 is an electrician. The "safe" choices are always engineering and medicine related. These are the plumbers and welders of the white collar world.

I'm an International Business Major.

I have mixed opinions on it. A lot of classes are bullshit management, spewing the same redundant shit over and over again trying to take a field and turn it into a science. Others, with proper teaching, can be really enjoyable. A good economics teacher can help you see through the muck and make you appreciate business. Accounting classes are decent. Most business classes, at least the ones I've experience, were generic, 150-200 students in a class, push them all through, until you start to get deeper in the major and you find more "selective" classes.

Getting a minor in Econ was a good decision. The more challenging classes but definitely worth it. I spent 2 years walking around campus with no idea of what I should do, taking all sorts of gen-ed classes. I'm fortunate to have a scholarship from the state that allowed me up to 5 years tuition. Since I had no idea what I wanted to do, I spent a bit mulling it over and settled on business.

There's a lot of frat boys and sorostitutes in business school..so take away from that sentence whatever you think you should take away.

Oh god, so many conflicting opinions. I think I'm more unsure than I started. So business is completely out the window? What about computer sciences? As a side note.. I wish I knew I could handle the workload of upper science courses.. and if I knew that I would have tried for med-school, possibly pharmacy. I shy'd away thinking that the math would be too much but once you apply yourself and actually try shit..it's really not that difficult.

Don't let something like that scare you away from whatever field you want. It just takes a bit of time and practice and its not all that much really.

Yes, do a community college. A better school will make a VERY big difference in your opportunities, which lead to more opportunities, etc.

Actually ANYONE who isn't full-ride should take their first 2 years there. The classes are smaller, the material is the same, you won't have a TA (almost all gen-ed in state schools is taught by grad students), and you'll pay far less.

Downside is you'll miss some parties. Boohoo - having money for coke at 25 will make up for it. College kids can't party worth shit anyways.

Comp sci is in huge demand, it's just more volatile than other engineering fields, and has more competition.

I dropped out of college, farted around for a few years, then started back in a comp sci program and got a build job while doing so. Left that job to finish my degree. Making 80K now, get treated like princesses by companies, can almost always find a new job in any major city within a month. Working on a demo to hopefully start my own product in a year.

Most important is your internship. Find a place that gives you provable experience in the platforms in demand. .NET, PHP, AJAX, etc.

Get life experience in work that will help you later on. Volunteer work at a local charity, sign up for groups around the city or school, go to a summer leadership camp, ROTC, scouts, just do anything that will make you look better than the average joe. Colleges look for this just as much as they look at your grades. A University will let you in even if your GPA is low because you have shown yourself outside of just your GPA(if that makes sense). Plus, some of these, like leadership training and ROTC, you can add to your resume. Always try to compare yourself to the president or giant CEO. He didnt get to where he was by just having a high GPA; his actions outside of school paved the way for them, and people noticed.

I would say go with military service. Most of 4chan will tell you it is bullshit. But trust me: A company would rather hire an average GPA with military experience, rather than a perfect GPA with no external qualities other than he knows how to study. Any engineering is going to have a heavy workload. I'm pretty sure you can be an undeclared engineering major and then choose what tickles your fancy after a year or so. You may also want to pick somewhat on where you want to live and the demand there (ex, some places will have little to no demand for aerospace engineers).

as for comp sci it's not bad, might as well just do computer or software engineering if you're going to go balls to the wall working hard for four years.\

Actuary is also good, starting ~25$ per hour but you have to have pretty good grades to get hired.

As for community college, I wouldn't reccomend it for anything except business because the math/science there is a bad joke. You will be very far behind your peers when you eventually go to real college if you end up doing something science/math related.

TLDR choose whichever one you think you'll like most after weighing your options but whatever you pick WORK YOUR ASS OFF.

Also never stop working out.

Not really. The real art of programming WELL isn't just figuring out an algorithm, it's also doing it in a way that is extensible and can be reused. I've worked with a few, while they think their code is brilliant it's dense, unmaintainable, and usually extremely bug prone. All of which, in a professional setting, means bad.

I'm in community college for engineering and I mostly agree with this. Like, we still learn the material, but not as efficiently as we would, and there's some practices my teachers have that piss me off. For example, we're using C++, but the teacher still puts ".h" on all headers, and my calc I teacher is OCD about not having negative exponents, but he'll just write a prime after a function to show it's a derivative.

I mean, overall it's good for saving money, which I need to do because I'm poor and was lazy in high school, but I'm still going to transfer out as soon as my grades are good enough to get decent scholarship money at a 4 year.

Art school graduate here. I went to a prestigious school. Recently, I graduated with lots of debt regretfully. I actually have strong representational drawing and painting abilities. But my portfolio stinks, something is still missing in my brain. It'll be another year or two before my work is commercially applicable.

People tell me to quit and do engineering and stuff. I would never quit drawing, I love it too much. But the thought of relearning math intrigues me to no end. Honestly, high school math scared the shit out of me. But, I used to go to afterschool tutoring and turned my grades around. I don't believe I'm a lost cause.

I may have an opportunity to do illustration and graphic design for a certain company in NYC if I can turn my portfolio around. I just want /fit/ to tell me if I should take the dip and learn some engineering or math. I would never quit trying for a freelance career. People say, you can't be a Jack of All Trades. But this past week, I've been thinking hard about learning something else. I'm 23 btw.

All depends on chip type and programmer you use. Most microcontrollers support native C, some also extend to C++, usually with some little mods, however if you're good at C/C++ you shouldnt have a slightest problem. Try arduino - has plenty of C++ libraries.

Math is helpful, but you don't use too much higher stuff. It's more about being able to push many small steps together and see the larger picture. Take a basic programming course or tutorial and see how it works for you. .NET, which has a huge hiring demand right now, gives away their basic environments, download C# express if you're on Windows and do some basic tutorials.

Also, at least every place I've worked, IT refers to cable runners and network admins, not programmers.

If you don't intend to go to grad school the most important thing you can do besides graduate is get some fucking internships during your summers. If not that, take classes and graduate a year early. Everyone and their grandma has a bachelor's degree. You want that, plus job experience where you worked for fuckin' free. If you graduate early, then expect a year's worth of internships. Internships in your field of interest is the difference between an opening position at a company you want to work for, and slinging burgers while you wait the average 14 months to find something mildly related.

And no, working at McDonalds over your summers looks stupid.

A philosophy degree means you're going to graduate school, usually law school.

I, myself, am a philosophy major on the pre-med track. Shit is so cash although it's 3:49 AM and I'm still writing my 10 page midterm on personal identity. It's one of the cons of philosophy, having all your midterm papers due the same week with only 2 weeks to write them.

Hey /fit/, I'm not OP but I am in a similar predicament.

I am simply atrocious at math,I can apply myself and get the work done after intense studying and maybe squeeze out a meh grade. It is certainly not where my strengths lie.

But, I'm not a shithead and I've done some honest evaluation of my personal skills. I have a strong grasp of history and literature and I feel confident that I could fill out a leadership role/ project management nicely. The fact that so many of those degrees only lead to teaching positions that only perpetuate the useless degree worries me.

Is there any hope to find a great degree/job options where utilizing college level mathematics is not a priority? How is law when compared to that? Medicine?

Truthfully I would love to be a teacher, but I also want to one day be a family man, and I don't want to be a penniless peasant at the mercy of the morally and financially bankrupt state and federal budget planning committees while also having to worry about how I'll feed my kids.

I'm a 30 year old HS graduate with like 1 semester of college credits (money ran out and I was dumb).

I'm interested in going back to school, but i'm torn between a trade or going for engineering.

My previous working experience has been mainly retail and tech support. I don't really have contacts, and i've been unemployed for about a year and a half now, working under the table and doing freelance tech for a friend of mine under the table.

I was even looking at just getting any job to get myself back in the market, cab driver, SOMETHING, and working my way up from there. I have a family history of mechanical engineering, and it's something i've always enjoyed, but, again, i kind of blew my chances at college.

Its artsy, but its well regarded. It isn't like some bullshit women's studies hur dur you'll be homeless. 9/10 of Prime Minsters read PPE at Oxford. You can see how even if you do it at any good uni, its not a bullshit degree.

I mean, god's sake, its got econ for the "look at me i can do mathz" bit, and actually intresting things like politics and philospohy that ensure that, while you can likely transfer to become a number cruncher if you want, you can do a job you are actually intrested in.

I worked every summer except the first in a real job. I did audio research, wireless coding (encryption), worked in a kinesiology lab. Then I did graduate school in a finance program. I came out of grad school and made just shy of 100K the first year.
