manly tear time
>1972 Summer Olympics at Munich, 10,000 meter event.
>In the twelth lap, Lasse Virén gets knocked down by Emiel Puttemans, and Mohamed Gammoudi trips on Virén
>Both fall significantly behind the rest of the runners, Gammoudi forfeits
>Lasse Virén, 23 years old at the time, picks himself up like a man, manages to catch up to all the other runners even after falling behind
>Virén launches a sprint and from being last after falling, he finishes first and takes the gold, despite falling, despite falling behind, and sets the new world record on 10,000m
>epic manly tears
Virén repeated this feat of falling over, being last, catching up and still managing to win, in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He has and always will be my motivational figure every time I'm out there doing cardio.
Doesn't matter if I fall, doesn't matter if it rains, doesn't matter if the world is against me; I pick myself up and push even harder, and shed a tear for all these monumental men throughout history.
