Also you might be starting some GNOME services unintentionally, check your startup settings because they can affect RAM and CPU usage
You can also underclock your CPU if the temperature bothers you, or set CPU limits to LXDE's processes, using `nice`.

For many reasons. However, I prefer using a desktop environment that works out of the box where customizing it is intuitive. I don't want to read a fucking manual to learn HOW to customize something: I want to just customize it.

If you want to treat your computer like an appliance then you won't get much out of it. The strength of Linux is that you can take something like dwm and hack on it until you have a desktop environment that is light, efficient and acts in a way that is uniquely how *YOU* want it to be.

Just want to happily tap-tap-tap away with somebody else's defaults and change the theme every now and then? Go back to GNOME and complain every time they change something like every other know-nothing that contributes nothing to the community.

I'm sorry but I've never seen a DWM set up that wasn't just a recolored version of the default.

Always one bar, dark gray, removal of the corner buttons, indicator applets on the right side, 4 or 5 workspaces or whatever they're called on the left side, application fullscreen with the except of terminal and irssi combined into some gray setup, and the font color scheme either being a lighter gray or bright pink.

I personally like dwm. Now while I prefer a few more bells and whistles* than the vanilla dwm, it is perfectly usable with the default settings (though I would at least change the colors and font).
*My dwm is about 1.75k sloc bigger than the vanialla dwm is, but it is still lighter than AwesomeWM, xmonad, scrotwm, openbox or anything else I've tried (ok, expecting 2wm that's just a stripped down dwm)

Fuck, I want it simple and familiar.
Also, compiz. Makes it feel so much fucking faster (it isn't, 50-150ms delay for transitions, but I'm probably brain-damaged after using Windows for the past 15 years, and still dual-booting.)

I agree with others who said that GNOME services might be running, you should check to see if that's the case.
You should also look into disabling any unnecessary daemons. I disabled stuff like bluetooth on my eee (old model which doesn't have bluetooth) because it wasn't needed, but was still loaded up anyway.

When I switched to XFCE on my laptop, I was very surprised at how much memory was freed up. Here's a screenshot.

Not just the AUR. Even the main repos frequently contain broken packages. Updates leading to something fucking up == inevitable.

Question: Are there any distros aside from Ubuntu that offer alternatives to window-attached menu bars?

I fucking hate menu bars and in all honesty love the way Ubuntu handles them with indicator-applet-appmenu (works in Gnome, not just Unity)... But I try to change this in every other distro I've used and found nothing more than failed attempts at porting the now dead gnome-globalmenu project

It depends on the application and what toolkit they used. In gnome/GTK based apps, hiding the menu bar on an app is generally not done. Gnome Terminal allows this, but then it takes after Konsole, a KDE terminal. KDE/Qt applications typically allow you to hide the menu bar.

I agree, btw, I hate menu bars. They should be turned into right-click context menus.
