acer is just a bunch of outsourced parts slapped together in a plastic box. The best laptop brands are Lenovo Thinkpads, Asus and System76.

Right... But is it worth getting an Acer if it's all i can afford at the moment, or should i get, for example, an Asus with lesser specs?

Yes. Just get the acer. Definitely the best brand at bang for the buck, and they wouldn't give out warranties if their products were that bad.

I really don't know why people on /g/ hate Acer so much, well... other then the fact that they hate everything. Acer laptops are decent, you shouldn't have an issue with it, especially if you're short on money.

I think I got lucky with the Acer I bought in 2007. I have beat the ever-loving SHIT out of this laptop and it still keeps on cranking. The W key and the 2 key have popped off but they still work fine.

I'm also thinking about getting a laptop but It's hard to justify when I only use it for light work and internet browsing and this thing just wont die.

Got an acer at bestbuy for like $400 in 2007... it was actually a decent laptop except the keyboard was the mushiest peice of shit ever that wouldn't register half the keypresses. Traded it in for a Thinkpad and haven't looked back.

So you're getting a "best bang for buck"? So prepare to not be able to use it when it overheats. You're better off with a lower specs Asus, then that, 'cause you will actually be able to use it.
For example, my Acer, whenever I've run a game on it (Homeworld, a game designed to run on Pentium II), it gets insanely hot in minutes (around 90C), it can last like that for half an hour, before it shuts down.
Don't tell me about cleaning it up, I've asked Acer to do that while warranty lasted, and I've done it myself when it ended. You want to risk getting a laptop like that OP?
It's really not worth it.

Acer isn't necessarily bad. I have seen quite a few much more fucked up toshiba's and such and there price point is low. Thats why the mixed opinions. Because if you tak care of it, it will do ok and the people who are happy with ok love it. However, people who like flawless like asus or lenovo.

that depends a lot on the model
for example the 13" laptops im looking at, the sonys famously overheat
the asus is OK
and the acer 3820TG (which i ended up getting) has fans so good its always quiet and can overclock to shit

Acer is only slightly less shit tier than HP. They use cheap components and it really shows. They don't last very long. If you're looking best bang for buck, I highly recommend you stalk Dell Outlet for Business when tehy have a 25-30% coupon for Latitude laptops. E64xx (14") or E65xx(15") are very well screwed together and with 25-30% off you can get a very nice spec for $600.

Alternatively look at Asus K or N line.
