hello /g/

I want to try ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop (INB4 LOL ubuntu, I heard its a good place to start with linux)

anyway, how would I go about making a partition then resizing my windows 7 partition?

Start with Linux Mint, Fedora Core, or OpenSuse. Ubuntu is terrible since the 11.04 release for anyone who doesn't know enough on how to change which DE they use.

Sorry, I completely misread the question. Yes, gparted is a good option for resizing a partition, but honestly, most beginner distros can do this while you're installing, or the disk manager in Windows 7 can resize partitions as well.

As far as which to recommend, just go with the main distro. Its the one labeled "Linux Mint 10". The others are nice as well, but have quirky little issues that may cause problems for beginners.

the version of ubuntu that came out this week is full of new stuff and pretty controversial and has a lot of bugs that aren't fully worked out

my recommendation would be Linux Mint
its basically ubuntu with some useful stuff pre-installed and a prettier theme, and a community and manual thats all about welcoming newbies

linuxmint.com
also dont worry about making a partition before you start
the Linux Mint installer will do all that for you

The Linux distributions you're looking at will install the proper drivers for you. No driver hunting.

When you are installing Ubuntu, it will ask you if you want to use the entire HDD or make some partitions to keep your Window 7 partition along with Ubuntu in dual boot.

No, it will be sluggish as crap. Unity and Gnome are resource hogs. I would suggest looking at the Ubuntu spinoffs like Xubuntu or Lubuntu. They're basically the same thing but without Unity and Gnome.

I'm running ubuntu on my 8 year old desktop and its perfect

Unity for Ubuntu was designed for netbooks, in that its designed for a tiny screen. Everything is huge icons and very simple
which is great on a netbook, pretty annoying on anything with a full size screen

It's probably because you have the drive mounted. I recommend downloading a live CD and then you can run GParted from that. I know linux mint 10(and I'm assuming damn near every distro) let's you do this. But I recommend going with Linux Mint 10. It's sexy, and very easy to use.

The thing about gparted that a lot of people overlook the first time you use it is, after you get all your partitions set up like you want, you have to click the apply button towards the top of the window.

nice. on brother shitbook pro (lol macfag) found NTFS option and chose that. going with mint. for some reason went with NTFS 12gb (even though I said to make it 50gb) and 2 unformtted partions of about 3mb each, will sort out later, but for now, IMMA GETTING MAH MINT

Most mainstream distributions will have compatible drivers. You may be asked if you want to install restricted drivers after you boot the first time, go ahead and say yes. Basically, that installs the drivers that are closed source that come from the component manufacturers (typically for the graphics card). For the record, Linux doesn't run on NTFS, but that can and will be fixed while installing, so I wouldn't sweat it. Not 100% sure why it couldn't resize it any smaller than that, but might have something to do with where the Windows boot files are located.

if your computer runs on a battery, itll detect it and set itself up accordingly with a battery indicator in the toolbar, etc

So, I tried Ubuntu, OpenSuSE and Debian... I found that Ubuntu was somewhat too bloated and Kubuntu/Ubuntu+KDE package are simply too unstable. OpenSuSE tended to randomly stop working after an update and was quite bloated too (the bloat itself isn't much of a problem though); Debian, while lacking the bloat of the other two OS, only had access to outdated software and was a pain to manage in 64-bit mode.

Also, KDE4 sucked massive dicks while I tried it (latest I tried was 4.4.4 or something). What Linux disro could be right for me? (That's not Gentoo since the install fails completely on so many levels).

Well, with Debian, most people change it from the stable repositories (which really are outdated as all hell 99% of the time) to the unstable repositories which is a bit more current. That said, you might find it worthwhile to give Crunchbang a shot.

I changed my repos to unstable, but even then only some softwares were latest version compared to a fully configured Ubuntu I had the day before.
Gonna check crunchbang too, though.

That's unusual, but it does happen with some software packages, particularly with x64. Most packages have .deb files on their websites you can pretty easily install anyway, so that's another option of course.

That's a partition, not a bootloader... I'm not 100% sure what part you're seeing right now unless you did some sort of advanced install.

There a section about it on the ubuntu download page.
The purpose of it was to allow people to duel boot with windows in the fewest steps possible.
It's not a virtualization.
