You unpack the software
Then you READ THE README FILE
Then you configure the software for your system - let it know where your binaries are installed, what features you want, etc, also give it a chance to complain if you're missing something
Then you compile it
Then you install it
This is of course assuming you don't use a package manager that installs preconfigures and -compiled software for you.
