My computer has been crashing under heavy load lately. Specifically, during gaming. I'm pretty sure it's due to the CPU overheating. I've caught it go up to 60~C in Speccy. My stock cooler is not enough, and it doesn't help to live in a hot climate. What's the best CPU fan heat sink for an Intel Core 2 duo? Money is not an issue, but I want good value. I'm looking for good value. One thing worth noting, I need it to fit in a Antec Sonata Plus 550/Solo.

I thank you for any assistance you may provide in this troubling and frustrating matter.

Oh, that's during some HD Youtube viewing. I haven't been able to check it during gaming because obviously I'm gaming. Is there a program out there that can log the temperatures while I'm running it? The point being is that I don't know how hot it actually get's at full load. The 60 C figure is just from Youtube and web browsing.

I just did a clean install of Win7, 2 days ago. My computer is circa 2007, so that maybe ancient in computing terms. I dunno, how to pinpoint the problem exactly. It can certainly be software, but a complete crash just reeks of something wrong with the CPU.

My computer used to crash in an older case. I didn't mount the heatsink correctly, and so that was probably it. Anyway, this time it's mounted correctly, so I'm assuming the heatsink just sucks.

That depends on the nature of the "crash", if it just completely shuts off, with no error screen, and the CPU temps have been noted as high previously, then it's most likely the CPU reaching the thermal protection threshold and tripping an emergency power-down.

Why hasn't anyone helped me with my original request? I'm asking for a heat sink suggestion, not for criticism of my troubleshooting. If it turns out, it's not the heatsink, then that will help me eliminate one thing.

The case you're using is of average size, you won't have any troubles mounting most aftermarket heatsinks.

Just get that, it will fit the socket, the case and will be significantly better than the stock cooler.

Like I said, I've had a similar problem like this before. When I first built my computer, I didn't mount the heat sink properly (first time building a PC). It used to crash all the time and I had idle temperatures of like 60s and 70s C back then. I'm basing off my theory of the CPU being the culprit off prior history. It's not just a crazy idea I cooked up on the spot today. I highly doubt, it's software. I have a clean install of Win7 with the latest updates and drivers. It's either the CPU maybe the RAM failing or maybe the motherboard. I never updated the motherboards BIOS. It's 5 years old now. Should I do that?

The mark of the beast... Anyway the 60C figure is just from watching youtube and having a couple of threads open. I haven't been to actually measure the heat during gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if it shoots up to 80C or higher.

Turn it on, put two threads on.

Download and install RealTemp or HWMonitor
Watch your CPU climb to a certain temperatures until it crashes. If it crashes, make sure you know what temperature it was at. Try cleaning the fans, reapplying thermal paste or buying and installing a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+, a great budget heatsink.

Feel free to peruse the April 2011 issue of Maximum PC where they specifically compare 3 types of water cooling setups.

1) Corsiar H70 (plug and play) $110
2) Swiftech H20-320-EDGE (all in one kit) $339
3) Custom Setup (what YOU think of as water cooling) $558

Do you know which one had the lowest temperatures? Do you know how big of a difference the max temps were between the 3 types? Do you know which one is the best value?

No you don't, obviously.

Notice that the H50, the H70's predecessor fails to beat out several dozen AIR coolers. The H70 similarly fails to beat out current air coolers in a multitude of independent tests. Custom water cooling has no difficulty beating out any air coolers.
