Can I get a good laptop for $300? This will be just for studies, I don't care about gaming (If I can play games like Diablo II, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, Sims 2 etc, that would be a plus). I would like a reasonably fast computer (so 4GB Ram), with decent battery life (5+ hours). I would just use this for MS Office, Video Editing, Adobe Flash, etc. My Budget is 1k though, I'm saving whatever I DON'T use for a desktop, so if I could spend a low ammount of money on a laptop that meets those requirements that would be superb. Also: How is acer? Is it like e-machines, the RC Cola of computers?

acer owns emachines. but yeah, they are the equivalent of an Asian dell. For 300, your getting a netbook which will not be good for video editing. For video editing you need to spend a pretty penny

Acer tends to fall apart a little. (e.g. non essential trim pieces have fallen off my Acer Aspire One D250) However, overall i'm happy with it. (also only paid 75$ for the netbook)

Hmm.. How bad would 2GB of RAM be? I imagine I could still edit, it would take somewhat long to compile it though it would take a while. Basic applications like Office would run, and I could still play my old shitty games.

Avoid Acer like the plague. I work in a computer repairs shop, 90% of the machines we get in for repairs are Acer, they will last 2 years and then just fall apart

>>17263303 I have 1.5GB of RAM in my laptop and never end up using more than 500MB of it. But that's probably because I only use my laptop for web browsing/image viewing and do all my serious work on my desktop.

Get a Dell Vostro. They're business machines, lacking in style but well-made.

How slow is 1.5GB of Ram?
Like could you video edit it on it at all?

Are there any laptops with no OS pre installed?

The Lenovo Thinkpad x120e is Under $400 with student pricing, and possibly a few percent off with an ecoupon (I ordered mine for $360ish). 6+ hour battery life, sturdy Thinkpad construction, fast hard drive, overall business-level laptop.

That has a great battery life. Damn it to hell.
