I wouldn't recommend starting with Python, nor with Visual Basic (either VB6 or
VB.NET). C# and Java are good to start with, especially with the vast amount of documentation available online. C is sometimes a good starting point as it's a very basic language, and teaches you the fundamentals. A lot of languages are based off of it as well. In the end it comes down to what platform you want to use, your current experience with computers in general, and your dedication. Don't expect instant results, it's trial and error. Also, somebody will probably recommend reading SICP, while I've yet to read it, I understand it can be somewhat of a turnoff. Only read it if you find it necessary, otherwise, just turn to Google for everything you need, you'll eventually grasp the concepts.
