While in electrical apprenticeship school we talked a lot about fiber and how to use it. Basically for long runs you can't just use connectors. There's a machine that is very, very expensive that fuses two pieces together. If you're terminating it or making a splice there is a process of sanding the end down and making it absolutely fucking perfect before slapping a connector on it. I've never worked with the stuff myself, but I've been told it's a pain in the ass and takes a while to make connections. The technology IS getting better though, so the price and ease of installation should improve.
