I ssh into dedicated machines for the last two mentioned programs. I don't see the point in running neither a torrent client nor irssi on a netbook when the alternative is so much smoother.

i like ubuntu, even if i dont use it personally. i think if ubuntu became a defacto standard for linux, it might build a decent ecosystem around it. linux needs some standardization more than anything else right now.

i have things i dislike about it and disagree with some directions he goes with it, but hey, you get that with every OS.

Better application support because I cant be fucked to back port everything I want into Debian, in my experience better driver support, add-apt-repository script by default which is less of an issue to install and more of an annoyance, in my opinion a much better software center, etc.

Not OMG HUGE THIS IS SO DIFFERENT FROM DEBIAN differences, sure, but that's never really been what Linux distros were about.

if you want to switch between different DE's, a login manager is there to make it easy

doing something harder for the sake of being harder is not why we using minimal apps/methods

Wouldn't there be a way to not use a login manager at all when I, say, only want to use Gnome, and to set it up with a login manager for when I do want to switch to something else?

Not logging in, that's easy. But what about suspending to ram, rebooting and shutting down. I hate having to run sudo commands and waste time.

You can switch DEs by editing your .xinitrc. As for removing your login manager, that is a matter of preventing GDM from running at boot.
