What exactly is an HTPC?

Can a gaming pc be made into an HTPC with a big screen and remote?

I want to get a 32" monitor or TV and use that as my main monitor, or at least on the wall to watch movies and such, but still use my 19" for the most part.

I also want to get a remote.

I looked into the denovo and $100-$150 is a bit steep.

Is there a simple pause/play/next volume up/down remote with back lighting? A sleep button would be great too.
