This may be a silly question on the topic of I.P addresses, what does it mean when there is a / in it, eg. 192.423.46.1/54. Also that I.P is completely abstract. I have no cool technology pics so enjoy this ground ejaculation.

CIDR format to show the subnet mask. tells the number of bits in the IP address

10.10.1.32/27 --> [00001010.00001010.00000001.001]00000

27 bits are inside the square brackets.

Did you not read my other post where i said it's used to split up an ip address on two variables, either number of host devices (PC's - Mac addressed devices) or the number of networks you want to get from that ip address (30 networks on a school campus all with their own ip address range to assign via DHCP to hosts connecting to that network), Is that enough?

The purpose is to logically divide the network using IP ranges, each subnet is like a sub-network and each sub network has a range of unique ip's that can be shared between clients that will then be inside the same subnet.
